Burger Tuning Question for M235i

Hey guys,

I'm the proud owner of a slightly used 2015 BMW M235i. This is my first beamer and first time modding a car. I really don't want to change stock exhaust or intake. I was just thinking about doing an ECU tune from Burger which comes highly recommended from a fellow BMW friend of mine.

I found 2 options from Burger.

The JB+ is only $199 and looks easy to install:
https://www.x-ph.com/burger-tuning-b...install-tuner/

The Stage One is $379 and a bit more complicated but looks to give a little more performance (+5 whp/ +10 wtq):
http://www.burgertuning.com/f_series...all_tuner.html

I found a local shop that would install the Stage 1 for me for $100.
  • Is it really worth the added cost and complexity to go with Stage 1 over JB+?
  • Do these tuners compromise engine life or increase emissions?
  • Can I still use the various drive modes (ie. comfort, Sport, Sport+) or will the car always operate in one specific mapping with the ECU tuner attached?
  • My car only has 10k miles. Do I still need to change the spark plugs and/or coil packs on such a low mileage car if I do one of these modest tunes?

I don't race but I wouldn't mind a performance boost for passing on the HW.

I like the idea of the simpler ECU (JB+) that is much easier to remove when servicing my car at the dealership. Thoughts?

I attached an image of my M235i and departing Lexus IS350F for fun.

Just get a stage one. It is a piece of cake to install. After you disconnect the battery or pop the hood/lock the car and leave it for 15 minutes with your keys left in the house, it only takes about a minute to unplug your MAP and TMAP sensors (which are located on your chargepipe toward the throttle body and towards the back of your valve cover) and plug the stage one tuner in. Don't even bother with the JB+, it's a waste of money IMO.

They do not compromise engine life, N55's are pretty bullet proof engines and the stage 1 is fairly conservative for a tune.

All of your modes work just as they're supposed to and it doesn't effect driveability.

No sparks plugs or coil packs need to be changed.

If you're interested in the stage one, I have one for sale for $220shipped.

These aren't ECU tunes, they are piggybacks, just to clarify. They trick the ECU into running more boost. Both are perfectly good solutions for some extra power and both are under 10 minute installs once you figure out which plugs you are going to be using. Unless you're completely inept, get the Stage 1 over the JB+. The only reason the JB+ exists is because Dinan came out with a simple 1 plug solution and it is designed to offer a cheaper solution than the Dinan option.

I meant the gain difference between the JB+ to Stage One, not overall hp gain from stock.

You don't need to disconnect battery and wait 15 min, Stage 1 takes 5 minutes to install, JB+ takes 2.5 minutes Do they compromise engine life.... probably not, they do compromise the life of turbo since you are running higher boost

What about a chip like this instead of the Dinatronic or Burger options?

For this price i would do a JB4 instead

JB+, Jb stage 1 and Dinan sport are all good options with their own pros and cons

JB stage 1 will give you the most gains (install is still easy, takes less than 5 minutes)

JB+ is the best value

Dinan sport is a JB+ w/ bluetooth connectivity
