What will the BMW M2 / 2M have under the bonnet?

I know the 2 series hasn't even landed yet but talk is already hotting up in the car world about what the next generation of BMW's will have up their sleeves. BMW have a lot of work on their hands having set such a high bench mark with the arrival of the M135i last year. I think the first part of the question answers itself in truth, with the M3 set to be powered by a highly tuned 3.0 6 cylinder and the M135i and M235i both powered by 3.0 single turbo units the M2 must have a 3.0ltr engine itself to avoid it outgunning the M3 and being shown up by the non thorough M cars.

In terms of power. BMW have to push for at least 400bhp from the M2 to make it a worthwhile purchase for buyers. The M1/235i both produce 315bhp with 360-380bhp achievable from a £500 remap. I imagine the M2 will cost somewhere in the low 40's in terms of GBP so why would buyers opt for an M2 that only had say 360 bhp (which is said to be the figures in the CLA45 AMG) when they could keep their M235i remap it and buy and aftermarket LSD and still save money. Plus with RS3 rumoured to tip the 400bhp mark why would BMW want to fall behind with their next baby M car.

At a very early guess I'd say the M2 will run some sort of 3.0l unit that produces between 385-420bhp

Most manufacturers don't care about the what-ifs of the aftermarket. They don't care that we can tune one car over another. Very highly doubt the M2 will have 400HP. I'd expect no more than 350HP and that's being generous.

No way it will have 400hp.

Weight will be down but don't expect much more than 350-360 HP.

I am not sure if a second thread on the exact same topic is needed, here is the original thread with lots of input and discussion, still ongoing:

The 1M had only 20 more HP than the 135is, nobody seemed to complain about that. The M2 will have no problem selling with "only" 350hp.
