I'd say it's to save tires during their testing. That or the track was still wet from previous testing by the time they were ready to shoot

Why is that sad? No one is taking your steering wheel away. Just think of the safety it could potentially provide, reducing DUI's, etc...
I know I personally wouldn't mind letting the car work itself through traffic jams (and the occasional autonomous drift home every once in a while couldn't hurt

I could also understand from a programming perspective the difficulty of getting a car to drift on dry tarmac vs wet tarmac

Ultimately it's still a donut contest. Real drifting is far from what's depicted in the video, and I'm betting a good driver will vastly outperform the computer there, for the time being.
