The difference was $3750 which seems outrageous if you look at the difference between a RWD and xDrive 3 series or 4 series. But, what I started to figure out is that the base price for the M235i RWD includes a 6speed manual and the M235i xDrive is automatic only so if you include the $1600 for sport automatic on the M235i RWD the true difference between an equivalently optioned RWD and xDrive is $2150. Hope that made sense.

Do some research on the difference between xDrive and S3 "quattro." The S3 does not have a true quattro system, it's based on a FWD architecture so is biased that way and sends power to rear as needed. xDrive should be much better from that perspective.

Yup audis transverse Quattro is not even related to its longitudinal models (the ones that made them famous). Not a single torsen in there which makes it just like anyone else's Awd, electric. To be fair it's not really that bad but I think it's greasy calling it Quattro. 4motion is the better word (vw Awd).

according to what i've read, the haldex AWD has been reworked and improved for the S3 (and golf R). I wouldn't be surpised if an S3 w/haldex understeers less than an S4 w/quattro.

I'm guessing the weight difference will be less than 150lbs probably closer to 110lbs but that's a guess.

80 kg according to BMW's M135 vs M135 xDrive specs. Which is 176 lbs. They need to put that system on a bit of a diet!!

but we are talking about X drive...wouldn't that negate the performance "sport" suspension like it does in the f30? because of space of the awd system, wouldn't you not be able to run the 10mm lower suspension?
I don't know, I'm just asking. This has nothing to do with the fastest cars being AWD. But I would argue the best "drivers" cars are RWD ...458 / GT3, (or RWD biased AWD).... |

I'm sure the german engineers know what they're doing, but putting 300+ hp and that much torque through a system like that makes me nervous, especially when running fwd often for fuel economy. That's why I cancelled my CLA AMG order. I honestly think there's a point where they're getting too cute with all this stuff. My old S4 had true Quattro and I loved that car. But we're talking 260 hp and no front bias. Is rear wheel with snow tires better? No. That said I'd prefer 75% ideal and 100% predictable. Think the BMW system will be the best of those 3 though.

Congrats OP! Great choice ordering the xDrive. I Had an M135i rwd on order until I tested an xDrive version and it was even better! Changed my order and absolutely love the grip and being able to put down all the power instantly! No change in ride hight at least for the M135i xDrive.

http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=921776, see my comments. It's gonna be a great car with xDrive and I can't wait for a down and dirty track test - in English that I can read - to prove it. Not quite the same track manners that a RWD would have but for day to day use in weather that's not always perfect, it'll be hard to beat. On the negative side, there's that extra weight issue discussed above. Personally, not too big a deal but I'd like to see Carlos Lagos and Randy Pobst from Motortrend's Ignition video series to do a car to car comparison at Buttonwillow and give us all the last word.

So, it really is automatic-only? Wow, that's disappointing. I am surprised people are not more upset about this. I guess that I'll have to take that stack of money I would put into xDrive and spend it on snow tires and rims. I suppose that will be fine.
Is there also an xDrive 228 coming, and is that automatic-only as well? |
