"Would you like to take a break?"

My daughter was visiting from the West Coast over Christmas, and planned to visit a friend in New Jersey while she was here. I let her borrow my M235xi for the trip (~260 miles each way).

She's not the type to stop if she doesn't have to, so she drove straight through both times (4.5 hours). Both ways, right at the 3 hour mark, the gong sounded and "Would you like to take a break?" appeared on the iDrive, along with the picture of a coffee cup and two menu choices" "Show Shops" and "Close Screen".

I knew the car would suggest a break if your driving was beginning to deteriorate, as measured by your ability to maintain your lane (the "Attentiveness Assistant"). I didn't realize it would do it based just on time as well.

Very interesting and potentially helpful for a tired driver! Even more impressive that the car knows the difference between "break" and "brake", a sometimes elusive distinction around here!

I never heard of that feature. Very cool.

We took a similar distance trip (from New Jersey to Massachusetts, coincidentally) at Thanksgiving but never saw that message. I assume it's because we made a fuel stop in each direction, and never quite reached the three hour mark without shutting off the engine for a few minutes.

Our pretty much fully loaded 2011 X5 does not seem to have that feature. We've gone well over 4 hours on long trips between stops and never encountered it.

Same thing for us, before our daughter took it. We went to DC and back, but when my wife and I are together, we tend to stop every 2 to 2.5 hours for gas and to stand up for a few minutes. I hadn't done any solo 3 hour trips, so I hadn't seen it either.
