long term reliability of M235i

thinking of getting M235i or M240i when it's time to move on from my IS350. my daily commute is 70 miles, been averaging 22k miles/year last 5 years. and this will be my only car. how would the M235i holding up long term? anyone here with high mileages please chime in. no doubt i would absolutely get the extended warranty if i make the jump.

Engine wise, the N55 isn't anything new. I am sure the majority of the bugs have been worked out. If you go with the auto transmission, it's also not new. Similar transmission is being used in many different cars. I wouldn't worry about it. You have a good warranty from BMW.

Lexus IS is very well made, Lexus paint and interior materials (though Lexus interior room is a smidgen tighter) better. BMW puts it's magic on drivetrain and suspension and you can feel that.
Lexus probably cheaper to run over the long term, water pump on BMW are electric and plastic - where Lexus is belt driven and metal.

The key is finding an good independent auto repair shop after your warranty runs out. BMW's are around average for quality but the repairs can be expensive and the dealers will generally try and gouge you if you don't say no. I had my local dealer try to get me to put new plugs in my 335 which was 6 years old but only had 22K miles on it and had no problems.

I got a flat tire once.

Other than that it's been good since October 2014.

I had an IS350. No comparison to the M235i. Had E36 M3 and E 46 M3 too. Had a G35S Infiniti too after the E46 M3, and the Lexus was very good, but not in the same league.

Bottom line is that Lexus is is generally going to be more reliable than a German car...

All a matter of where you place your value on acquiring the right vehicle for you:

Reliability
Safety
Performance
Luxury
Value

Yeah I have 12k miles in 7 months and no issues.

I wouldn't get a first year M240i if I were you. That is going to be a brand new engines and may have first year issues.

Think HPFP, injectors, carbon buildup and wastegates on the 07-08 N54's

I lemoned my E90 335 after having all the above issues numerous times, it was an 08

They are all guessing, just buy the BMW and enjoy as you get 5 years warranty and after 5 years no car is not worth much. The 235 has only been out a couple of years.

We'll know in 10 years.

So far, my 228 has been completely trouble free for 11 months. I hope it continues.

Our future is bright.... electric cars won't have HPFP's we will all be driving an i2 version of the 2 series in not a distant future.....

we might end the burning in flames cause of the Lion batteries but oh well... you can't have your car and eat it too

How are the N54's holding up? I believe the 335is N54's are a bit more reliable due to the extra charge cooling. But I would image the long term reliability will not be kind on any of the turbos due to tiny intercoolers and high air temps and pressures involved.

Predictive Reliability: Diesel > NA > Turbo > Electric > Turbo/Electric
