There are a couple slightly used M2s here. I saw one with 8000kms and one with 9000kms both selling for $68,900. However, who knows what they've been through for performance cars like this

I put my order in for a M240i in the middle of January, so I got locked into the January incentives.

MSRP $55,424
Dealer Discount 5249
BMWFS incentive 3500
Loyalty incentive 750
Corporate Sales Incentive 500
Total 45425

so it was a pretty good price.

But the dealer was having trouble getting an allotment so I started looking around and saw a M2 available at $56776.29 that they would sell at MSRP, with $2000 Corporate Sales Discount for 54776.29.

So without an allotment on the M240i, I went to test drive the M2 to decide if the M2 was worth the extra $10K. I had tested the M240 and the M240 performance edition. I really liked the M240. It was the first car I'd driven that I thought drove as well as my E46 330Ci ZHP. Surely the M2 wasn't THAT much better.

So the M2 impressions. I loved the seats more than any car seats like ever. The blue stitching looks amazing and the seats felt really amazing. The ride admittedly was a bit rough, but I've never felt that planted to the road in any other car, not even a M4. I really liked the M240 but really really loved the M2.

I left. I had to get back to work and I have a rule you never ever buy a car without going home and running the numbers. When I got home 2 things happened. The other dealer sent me the build code for the M240, they got the allotment. And the M2 disappeared from the dealers inventory it was sold.

So I'm sure I'll be perfectly happy with my custom built M240i that I got a super fantastic deal on. But I'll always think about that blue M2 as the one that got away.

Take it for what its worth but I owned a 2015 M235i that I traded in for a 2017 M2 that I sold after 3 months of owning and got back into a 2017 M240i. I personally prefer the M235/M240 over the M2. I may be in the minority but owning all 3, I think its a pretty unbiased perspective.

Curious what was is about the M2 that made you prefer the M240? When I did the test drive, I made a point to ask to drive down a "shitty road" and even in comfort setting it felt pretty brutal. I'd just test driven a M240 performance edition with the 19" tires to see how rough it would be with the 19s and the M2 was far more jarring down that road. The M240 PE felt about the same as my E46 ZHP ... and if it hadn't been white (I really want the blue) I would have grabbed it on the spot.

It also felt like driving would require a lot more focused attention and can see how that would get tiring after a while. I own a Motor Coach and a Gillig bus and you have to be REALLY paying attention with those and one of the nice things about getting back into my E46 is how effortless it feels in comparison.

I’ll be honest there are a few things I prefer on the M240 compared to the M2. I am most likely in the minority for this one but I actually prefer the ZF8 transmission than the M DCT. I also prefer the steering feel and suspension of the M240. The interior of the M2 felt extremely boring to me going from a coral red interior M235, I switched back to coral red on my M240 and definitely missed it! Also prefer the B58 motor on the M240

i cross shopped the m2 and m240i
the ride comfort and smoother less turbo laggy b58 won me over

about the only thing the m2 had over the m240i for me was looks....if they made a "grandsport" m240i with the m2 body mods i think many would opt for that...

The new M5 went from the DCT to the ZF in 2019. That car is a beast.

I'm not sure how the m240i is a better DD than the M2... The m240i has a slightly less aggressive suspension and is quiet in stock form, otherwise it's the same car. But, I'd argue that the M2 is also relatively quiet compared to other performance cars out there and the suspension is still very soft and comfortable.

With all that being said, I have an m240i because it was a much better value - roughly 15% off of msrp and 0% financing. At that time the M2s were still being traded for MSRP. Keep in mind that I wanted to track the car (two weekends a month) and knew that the M2 was a better car out of the box. But, after some Ohlins, wheels, and an LSD, I'd say that my car is probably as fast if not faster than a stock M2 around the track and I still have have another $10k to blow before I get to the MSRP on a comparably equipped M2.

*Side note, my friend just bought an M2 for $5k off of MSRP. He had a trade in so I am sure that had something to do with it but they did offer him $3k off without much of a fight or mention of a trade in*

Yeah I’ll be honest upgrading to the M2 from the M235 I was optimistic because I felt it had to be better. Honestly that’s not what I felt behind the wheel, I found myself missing the m235 so I sold the M2, took a little break from cars altogether and just got back into an M240 in January and love it!

I'm never in search of the "best car" but rather "the best car for me."

So many factors at play it's impossible for anyone to make that call but you.

Maybe the demand for the M2 is sliding? Around my area the dealer is offering ~1K off of MSRP for 18s and I am assuming if you negotiate they are willing to offer a few thousands off as well. I also seen a brand new 2017 M2 for sale with Zero KMS knocking off 5K off MSRP.

Only thing that I want from M2 is 245/265 tire/rim. (and maybe wide body, it looks so cool lol)

Throw those tire/rim on M240, it will be 98% of M2.

Still, if you compare msrp for both cars, M2 is reasonably priced.
Actual cost you pay? there is 5~10k difference between 2 cars and I don't think M2 is worth that much more.
Well, I would say 5k difference is reasonable.

they are both great cars. It's just down to personal preference. Nothing more.

I agree, also the signature M electronically controlled LSD is the only thing in the M2 that really makes it a better handling car over the 235/240i. Currently, the 240i puts out more power than the M2 and looks aside, it's pretty much the same exact car, with a few parts turned up a notch.

I tried humble to point this out on the M2 forum and was flamed by some holier than thou M2 owners, who honestly believe that their "real" M vehicle can walk (drive) on water...

I believe that when the M2 Competition is unveiled next month, there will be a lot more to distinguish it from 240i but there will be the obviously sticker shock and lengthy back order but I say wait it out, you'll probably be in better position to negotiate a great deal on a new 240.

I've driven both and the M2 didn't really wow me. The m240i did, because it is a lot of car for the money. Out of the box, I would say the M2 is a much more competent car. But with the little I've done to my m240i, I will argue that it is now more competent than the M2. THe only thing the m240i lacks is enough space to put more rubber down, it is way too narrow. Oh, and the offsets are too high so it is pretty difficult finding off the shelf wheels for the car.

A good indication of demand is always the price. Last summer, the M2s were still trading at MSRP for a gently used car and allocations at MSRP were tough to come by. Now, it looks like a used M2 is roughly $10k+ off of MSRP and dealers are discounting new cars. I am sure glad I didn't keep my allocation since part of the reason I wanted to buy it was value retention. Now it is depreciating like any other car.

I fixed the tire/wheel issue (18x9 et42 square w/255s, coilovers/bushings). Still saved about $20k over the cost of a new M2, stock with all mods purchased.. I'll work one hard at the track, too, won't have a chance in stock form. Therefor, for me, I have the better and more capable car, that is uniquely tailored to my style, which is road/track with an emphasis on track handling. If you drove my car, today, and then drove a stock M2, you might find yourself wondering which is the "real" M car. Mechanical LSD > Electronic, imo, too.. Easier to predict and modulate mid turn, less "drift" focus, more grip focus..

All in my opinion, but I've always been a fan of an underdog build (to a degree) where you have the higher performer, at a significantly lower "all-in" ownership cost. Once you start going over that healthy balance of vehicle + mod costs, it's usually cheaper to buy the more "equipped/capable" car, in stock form than to mod, but in my case and with the M2**i options, it takes very little to get it where you would want it to be in relation to the M2's behaviours. It's like BMW fckd up, made the M2**i cars too good, and left no room for the M2. It's sad reality for an M2 owner who bought over the hype, and then dusted at the track by the m-lite edition... Can't complain with less $$ and performance..

Kudos to BMW for finding a "just right" distinction between the M2 and the M235/40i. One for the hardcore enthusiast, and one for the value-conscious modder.

There's not a bad one in the 2 Series bunch, IMO... chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry. A flavor for everyone.

I bought my 240 in December of 2016 as my DD. The 240 spec i wanted came out to 52k and if i remember correctly the m2 i wanted was around 60k. If 8k was the only difference between the cars i would be driving the M2 but it was not that easy.

Every dealer i spoke to in the DMV area at that time told me they were selling m2's 5k-10k+ over MSRP with a minimum wait time of 9 months. The spec of the 240 i wanted was available at a nearby dealer and after some negotiating, i got 9.2% off msrp.

At the end of the day, the 240 cost roughly 50,000 after taxes and tags and i was able to drive it off the lot without waiting.

With dealer markup/taxes/tags, the M2 would have cost a minimum of 68k plus i would have had to buy another car to drive for 9 months while i wait for the car to be built.

Is the M2 worth 20k more than the 240? Maybe, but as a DD i didn't think so.

I'm happy.

My salesman said as a daily driver I would be happier with the m240i over the M2 anyways.
M2 is a better track toy.
Your salesman also said Elvis is alive and he drives a Mini...

Moral of the story, whatever a car salesman tells you, you can take it to the bank that 90% of what he says is incorrect, inaccurate and invalid.

You simply can't make a catch all statement saying the m240i is a better daily driver than an M2. I picked up a loaded 2018 m240i Vert in late October 2017 for what I thought, at the time was a great deal. I wanted an M2 but the dealer only had one which was way overpriced and was black with black leather, yuck. Now the same dealer has 2 M's, pricing a bit more down to earth and would have been within reach. In the secondary market there are 3, within a 250 mile radius of where i live, each under 10K miles and in the same price range as what I paid for the 2018 m240i. Should I have waited... who knows....

This past January, I was able to get my hands on a friends 2017 M2 manual and drive it daily for 3 week straight. I can tell you first hand the M2 makes for a dandy daily driver, blows my m240i out of the water in the fun factor for daily driving; that included driving with the top down. You see, when you daily drive, any day can easily become a partial track day. I found myself taking the long way to and from work and exploring some of the many country back roads found in South Alabama, the more turns the better. The M2 is simply a more driver engaging car.

I have done a few mods since then, Stage 1 and swapped out the all weather treads for summer only. With the Stage 1 and new tires, driver fun has increased but still not close to the M2 experiment. The spouse hated the M2, loves the convertible, she would slit my throat if I traded it in for an M2 now. I will have to wait till the end of the year to initiate "Plan B", wife takes current car, I get a "pre-owned" M.

Not only a "salesman", I don't need a salesman to tell me which is a better DD for ME. Also, it is a well published opinion (based on car reviews/reviewers) that the M240i is the better DD for majority people over the track focused M2. Also, the fact that in places such as Canada - where most people opt for the xDrive system - M240i is the only option.

I don't think anyone is arguing the fact that the M2 is a more driver focused car, but for most people the 240 is more "livable".
