Squealing sound when lightly pressing the brakes

Yesterday when I pulled into the lot at work I heard a squealing sound coming from my brakes. Kind of like the brake wear indicator sound. It only happened once though. This morning I heard it again when I was in a bit of traffic and again when I pulled into the lot.

The car isn't even a month old. :/ Anyway, is this covered? Should be, right?

Squealing is normal when coming near a stop.

Try a the following to remove possible light glazing on rotors: drive on a road with no traffic, at 60mph aggressively apply brakes (but don't activate abs) to a speed of 20mph. Accelerate up to 60mph and do it again....repeated 3- 4 times. Your brakes will be quite warm so drive a few miles without stopping to allow them to cool off. This should remove any glaze on the pads/rotors. If you still have the issue check w/dealer.

After 1,500 miles you'd think that brakes would already be broken in though. :/ I'll give this a shot tonight. I have the perfect road to do it on near my house. Thanks.

:/

My wife's Merc had a similar issue. It ended up being some spring or something that's supposed to return the pad to the original position, but it was malfunctioning with low speed/light braking. Basically similar issue in my car. Also, it just started happening. Driving habits haven't changed. Doesn't seem normal to me.

I've had this on all 3 of my cars. Seemed to be temp related but anytime I mentioned to my service guy they lubed the brakes and the squeal disappeared.

My car has nearly 9K miles on it now, and it still squeals lightly at times -- even when the rotors are warmed. Based on other threads, it partially has something to do with the OEM pad compound.

Also, don't feel too bad about the squealing ... I had what I think was a small pebble lodged in between my rotor and the pad in the middle of Big Bend National Park a few weeks ago. It made a horrible screeching sound -- only going forward, not in reverse -- and I initially thought I had a serious problem in one of the Continental U.S.' most remote NPs. A hard application of the brakes at about 15mph dislodged the pebble ... and my butt unclenched.

There is variation on this. Two years in, and never a squeal so far.....

Interesting. I wonder if climate has something to do with it; humidity, etc ... I don't have the THP, so it could also be that -- though I'd imagine the M Sport fixed-caliper brakes likely have a slightly more aggressive compound than the standard floating calipers ... ?

Climate may also be a function of my car spending every night in the garage. I do see some members appear to park outdoors. But, even on cold days at work, I have not heard a squeal after sitting all day. Squeal also can relate to the proper application of grease during the pad installation.

As far as aggressive pads, I am also surprised at the low level of dust on the MSport brakes.

From what I've heard it's fairly commonplace.

That's a great point. I park in a covered garage, but it's open to ambient outside air and not climate controlled. Hmmm ...

Man, the fact that it's common is disappointing then. I find it to be embarrassing. :/ I'm gonna call the dealer on the way to the gym and see what they say.

Mine is garage parked at home and work. I have brake squeal when I first get going nearly all the time with light pressure. Goes away once things warm up. I asked about it at one of my service appointments. They said it was normal for "high performance brakes".

Maybe I can't do "light pressure"!

But, seriously, I've had squeal in other cars of this caliber, but not this one. I cannot explain it.

Well, dealer told me to bring it in Tuesday and they'll provide a loaner. Gotta use some of my time, but oh well.

Low? My wheels are literally covered in dust all the time. Within a few hours of cleaning them they're all dusty again.

Hmmmm....between noise and dust, this is starting to seem as if there was a pad formulation change at some point in production.

Honestly, if fewer people complained about brake noise and dust, our cars would be equipped with much better performing brakes.

Compared with pre-2011 vehicles, current non-M compounds are weak sauce.

Crap......my wheels get dusty too which I can deal with. I can deal with noise too if it means better performance. I shouldn't have complained. I've failed us!!!

I hear this occasionally as well with my 2016 M235i. It's a minor annoyance, and thankfully it doesn't seem to happen often.
