I'll admit to having a relatively heavy right foot, but not as heavy as some, especially not while I am breaking in my 228i M Sport AT and keeping it under 4k RPM for most of the time. I drive it in Sport mode in the city (Los Angeles). BMW claims 23 mpg for city driving, yet if I'm careful, I get 14 mpg. It was the same in my last car, a six-cylinder, 3.8L Genesis Coupe Track Edition.

I am not complaining; I did not buy this Bumblebimmer for fuel economy but for practicality combined with sharp performance. Still, manufacturers' mpg numbers have always seemed like fantasy to me.

I suppose 23 mpg city is strictly in EcoPro mode, but I'm not sure I could bridge the gap between 14 mpg in Sport mode and 23 mpg in EcoPro even if I drive like my mother.

What do you all think?

I honestly think each car is different IMO i get 21.8 MPG mixed with city and highway because i live off of Sport Mode it's the only way to drive the car. I tried eco out a few times, was bored to death! but 14mpg on city for a 228 my m235 isn't near those numbers. Odd very odd.

Barry the first step is getting help is admitting you have a problem. Know that you are among friends and we all want to help. Unfortunately you are posting in the wrong forum since WE ALL have the same problem.

On a more serious note the top reasons why folks don't get as much mileage are:

1) More city driving
2) More liberal use of the accelerator (a common 2 addict malediction)
3) The inclusion of ethanol which is 8-10% in most states (EPA tests with 100% gasoline).
4) Lastly to my knowledge (this has been debated) the test results are obtained in Eco-mode.

I get 22-23 driving in sport mode in the city. I do not have a lead foot though. I use the acceleration when appropriate. On the highway I go comfort and get 34-36 driving within 10 mph of posted limit. The numbers are based on driving the normal posted limits and conditions. Guys getting bad numbers are driving hard simple as that. This is with 10 percent ethanol gas...i get 2 mpg better on 100% but the premium for 100% is not worth the extra 2 mpg.

OP is talking about 228i... careful to compare to M235i numbers.

With that said I have a quite heavy right foot and I have been averaging 23mpg, mixed highway and some city jaunts.

I average 25mpg combined with my manaul trans 228i m sport...and I HAMMER it on nearly every on ramp when someone isn't ahead of me.

In Sport mode, decelerating uses a lot of gas because the car downshifts at higher RPM and the car is always receiving throttle input in an AT. Anticipating where you're going to stop from much further out and coasting to a gentle halt, minimizing engine braking would save a lot of gas, I reckon, but even though I do not rush up to red lights (that's an obnoxious habit) I tend to drive the car to a halt rather than coast it. It is odd, though, seeing less than two thirds of the advertised city mpg.

I also pull pretty hard off every stop light when no one is in front of me. I wouldn't say I'm beating on the car, but I'm definitely not babying it.

I´have got a 220 (2.0 180 hp), it weights few pounds less but also has less power. I am getting arround 20mpg mostly comfort mode in city (70/30)... In sport mode I asume is arround 18mpg. Average numbers on the computer are not the real deal. These should NOT be compared to 235 numbers anyway.

I basically have the same car as you: 2015 228i M Sport w/ the 8AT. I averaged 23.3MPG during break-in, with about 60 percent city and 40 percent highway -- but 90 percent of that was on Comfort mode because I didn't want to unintentionally rev the N20 past 4,500 RPM (still happened three or four times, LOL). I was very good about varying RPMs during highway driving, so I downshifted quite a bit using the paddles.

That said, I'm in an area with high fuel ethanol and available 93 octane -- and reading what I've read regarding how much more power and a cleaner burn 93 gives over 91 makes me think that's worth maybe half a MPG per tank. Now, almost 2K miles in, I'm averaging about 24MPG, with a lot more Sport-mode driving.

I noticed that during break in the mpg was pretty low, it definitely improved for me over time. I'm in a 235 and drive exclusively in sports mode and average around 18-21 mpg depending how hard I push it.

I get about 14 in my 235 for city when in traffic. the stop and go kills the mileage. the 22mpg is probably based on traffic moving a decent pace vs. the snail pace of LA

My M235i has a combined average of 23.7 MPG since new. That's 5300 miles of mixed driving. I consistently see 32 to 34 MPG on the freeway, driving 65 to 80 MPH. And I stick my foot in it quite a bit. I'm very pleased with the MPG.

I had to cringe the other day while driving my 330ci to see a lady about 60 yrs old driving a white m235i. Maybe she's staying in Eco mode getting in the high 20's mpg

I usually vary between 60% streets and 40% freeway and am roughly 60% comfort/40% sport and am getting around 19mpg. I only have 300mi so it's not broken in yet. I haven't gone above 5K rpm yet either.

35mpg is a pipe dream.

Not for the 228i...its the norm...highway in comfort that is.

I've been trying to be gentle most of the time lately, and stomp on it when necessary (or just for fun). My trip computer is putting me at 28 mpg combined. That's about the last three tanks. However, I'd say the first 1-2k miles I was only averaging around 22-23 mpg combined.
