In all seriousness, I wasn't paying attention to the RPMs - when Chack and I have more time to do some extensive driving, we can take better notes as to all of those data points.

I was personally set on getting a m235i. The day I saw the leaked photos of the red m235i I fell in love with the car. I genuinely thought it was the best looking BMW in the past 10 years but in person, it just didn't do it for me.
For me the m235i to 135i is what the E89 is to the E86. The E86 had a face only a mother could love with body proportions that would make any car designer cringe but that's also what gave it an aggressive look. The E89 has way more mass appeal with a more luxurious feel. The power output is similar between the 2 (n52 vs n52 or S54 vs N55) but most would argue the E86 felt sportier and more raw. I think much of this applies to the M235i vs 135i comparision as well with the caveat one could argue the m235i is just as sporty (with naysayers focusing on weight, electric steering and lack of 6MT). Both great cars, but I happen to be in the minority that likes the "ugly" BMWs. I own both an E82 and E86 and for some reason I think they are the best looking, unique, true drivers' cars BMW has put out in the last decade. vs vs Last edited by 3002 tii; 09-10-2014 at 02:20 PM.. |

Since both cars have very similar power, could it simply be the weight difference? Similar amount of fuel in the cars, or not?

I think he had a little less than 1/4 tank and I was around 1/2, maybe a little less than that....

"As I said in my original review, the M235 "felt" bigger to me after just a few days of ownership. That feeling was exacerbated and much more prominent yesterday after getting back into the E82.
Additionally, and worse than my original impression in March, the M235 felt squishy and somewhat lazy in comparison to the N54 135. The E82 just feels more "urgent" in every way. The steering is tighter. The car feels more compact. The engine felt like it revved more quickly and had a better throttle response. " Hmmm. Very interesting comparison. Seems like bigger is bigger and whether that is good or bad is more of a personal preference thing and maybe more of a driving style today thing. The other issues make me wonder if a bit of parts swapping could bring the car more in line with what the o.p. is missing. Springs & tires for a more solid & connected feel, a bit of mapping / breathing work to make the engine feel a bit more angry. It would be interesting to have a couple folks who have done a bit of tweaking chime in on how or whether it effects the character/feel of the car. |

Both cars are stock, right?
And the 135i ever-so-slightly was pulling away? What's the weight of each car, stock? That's probably most of the reason... As to the "feel", well, they are different cars. You can call the 235i "refined", or you can call the 135i "direct"; same difference. <shrug> FWIW, I drove the 135i, 228i, and 235i all back-to-back, some more than once, when shopping over the summer. Coming from a Mazda MX-5 (NC model, current gen), I preferred the 135i, and that's what I bought. Had there been a 235i for the same (or very close) price, that decision would have been much harder, since there are things I like about both. Pure driving and feel though? I'd have to go with the 135i. But again, I'm used to a short-wheelbase, "choppy" ride (relatively speaking).

Right, but you don't have exhaust, tune, jet-pack, etc...
Aka, stock in my opinion. Can't wait for the people who want to say you were pulling away because of your DCI.

I drove a 135is for a week and it is absolutely in no way better than the M235. Perhaps smaller yes but better no way! Both are great cars but to say that the 135 is equal or better to the M235 is like me saying that my C6 vette is better than my C7.
Again, both are great cars but the older is not on par equally with the new one. Albeit some drivers may prefer one to the other purely on personal preference. |

For the record, my preference is the M235i. But is someone really that crazy for feeling the exact opposite of what we feel? This last comment is unrelated you or to the quote above-- more just a general comment for this forum as a whole; but MAN... this is my first BMW and I've never seen another brand whose enthusiasts are so internally defensive. We're all on team BMW here! We just happened to buy our cars at different times and have different needs. |

My overall point is that the general focus of these cars is shifting - which totally makes sense from a business/BMW selling more cars point of view. I just didn't expect the subjective feel of the two cars to be so different.

Like I said, it is all relative to preference. Both are great cars. The new one has been reviewed by just about every magazine out there as not only the best evolution but also as possibly the best BMW builds today.

Small differences aside it seems like there is a lot of gravitation to whatever has most of the old focus. Harleys were supposed to die way back in the 70's, not be copied by all the manufacturers selling more modern designs. |
