Novice Power question

Forgive my novice car knowledge. I realize (after a physics lesson from another kind member on this site LOL) that Power = Torque X Rotational rate (i.e., rpm). Using the onboard sports display as my guide, I've tried but can't get the hp above 200hp or so, despite delaying the upshifts using steptronic paddle/gear-stick shifting and revving the engine. It seems no matter how aggressively I drive, I can't break this barrier. What gives? Does one basically need a good long free-of-traffic route (AKA track setting) to accelerate like a bat out of hell to get the hp up? I've been told that the power curve of the M235i is VERY linear/smooth such that the N55 engine doesn't feel as powerful as the N54 engine, but that makes little sense to me (i.e., since when was the power curve of the N54 engine non-linear?). It's also been suggested to me that while the outgoing M-cars used to derive their power by revving to the redline range, that is not the case with the M235i, which explains in full auto mode why the car upshifts fairly quickly and maintains a fairly constant 3-4K rev range to develop its acceleration and power, regardles of the gear. Anyway, as always I'd appreciate some insights as to how to get the 320hp I paid for LOL.

I've never even looked at the sport displays. Maybe if I leave this evening I'll turn them on and see what the highest I can get it to is...

I have not seen the SD on a m235 in action but have seen this on a 335i, which does almost max out the HP gauge from a stop.....so id expect to see the 235i react the same.

can you take a video of your sport display... to see how its reacting to your aggressive driving?

Put it in sport mode and floor it. Don't let up on the throttle until redline. That should get you to the advertised 320HP. If you don't open the throttle all the way or you let off the throttle before redline, though, you won't see the max HP.

If you did all of that and it is giving you a different number, then you probably should take it in to get looked at.

found the vid of a 335i almost maxing it out from a dig, first 3 gears. again, this is what i would expect from the 235i as well.

maybe your 235i is in limp mode?

I plugged in my OBDII reader and Torque Pro a while back (228i) just to see boost levels. In Comfort mode, my boost was maxing out around 12psi, but in Sport I was up closer to 17psi. I didn't bother testing Eco Pro, but I'd bet boost is turned way down. So if you're doing tests, do make sure you're in Sport or Sport+. And like bernstem said, floor it till redline or you won't get the HP reading you expect.

Is 326bhp the maximum the sports dials will show or will it go up higher when the car has things like a jb4 put on?
