Squeaking side mirrors
When the side mirrors open or close, they make a squeaky sound. Because I have the car coded to open the side mirrors when I unlock the car and to close them when I lock the car, they may be engaged more than is usually the case.
Any recommendations on how and with what to lubricate them? |

Did it just get very hot where you live? It went up to 85 in Boston yesterday and mine started squeaking.

The squeaking has been going on for some time, but not consistently. The weather here has generally been unseasonably cool (in the forties and fifties), but there have been warmer days, and yesterday and today the temperature has shot into the lower nineties. I did not notice a correlation between warmer weather and squeaking side mirrors, but you may have something there.
Even if this is heat-related, I would like to fix it. Anyone have any suggestions? |

My M240i's drivers side (your passenger side) squeaks intermittently - which is obviously very frustrating as its hard to replicate.
I was going to mention it at its first service next month, but I have aftermarket CF mirror caps, so thought they'd just deny the issue on that alone |

I'm thinking about silicone lubricant, the same kind used on sliding caliper guide pins.

I read somewhere that most car shampoos will cause squeaky door seals eventually. Supposedly, Sonax products from Germany are used by BMW, and their shampoo will not cause the seals to squeak. Perhaps there are some seals/gaskets inside the mirrors that are getting exposed to the cleaning agents you guys are using to clean your cars. Just a thought. I hope this does not happen to my m240i.

You are going to have to take the back cover off to get to the parts that need greasing not oiling!! Take the cover off and operate the folding mirror mechanism.
Locate the offending squeaky part and spray it with Wurth HHS-K. Why use HHS-K? Because it is compatible with rubber and plastic. But, most importantly this is magical stuff! It sprays on like a penetrating oil creeps into all the nooks and crannies and then turns into a very thick tenacious grease. |

mdputnam,
Thanks for the recommendation. I have ordered some HHS-K. How do I take off the back cover off? Just pry it off with a small screwdriver, or is there some trick to it (or better tool to use)? |

had the same issue and I informed the service advisor when i sent my car in for servicing. they managed to fixed it by putting some lubs/grease. but after awhile it came back again. i learnt to ignore it. LOL.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. Armed with a can of Wurth lubricant and a set of trim tools, I got ready to have a go at the side mirrors. I have coded them to close when I lock the car, and I noticed that in the closed position they exposed a small part of the mount that they swivel on. I figured that, before taking out the mirrors and taking off the backs--in other words, while the mirrors were still in one piece--it made sense to spray lubricant in that area to see if that by itself would do the trick. Turns out that it did. No more squeaking!
