Who would be interested in a custom hitch?

So I can't wait for someone to maybe decide to make a hitch for our 2 series....I need one now. I have called multiple manufacturers and they all say the production numbers/demand does not justify making one. i have had some lengthily communication with Curt and they say they are not planning it either so.....

I am discussing the idea with a fabricator of producing a hitch for my car. He inquired if this would be a one off or if I knew any other owners that might be interested. Just an idea......mine will be a 1 1/4 receiver to accept my one-up bike carrier.

I think the idea is that just to do my car is is a lengthy process to design, mock up and build it....so a lot of his time would not recoup $$$ but if he was to sell multiples then is makes the whole idea more appealing for him and his time

Just an idea...what do you think? No discussion of pricing as of yet....sure it will be quite expensive for just my car. I met with him today and we took a quick peek at the 235, I explained my demands (I want full bolt on if possible), discussed some possibilities and it looks feasible with out much modification to the car. The next step will to take bodywork off the rear so he can do some serious measurements.....

So I am open for some discussion

Curt did a hitch for the 1 series, when I suggested a hitch for the 3 series before one existed they said they would do it but they'd need a donor car.

If you got enough interest and could find them a donor they may be able to do it for you. I was looking at a custom route for my F30 but by the time I found someone, Curt had released their hitch.

If I jump to a F22 next year I would definitely want a hitch.

Yes that was discussed with Curt and there has not been a donor car or volinteer as of yet. Not even a hint bay their words. They also checked their request database and also production run numbers for the car and based on that they put it on the back burner......way on the back.
I can’t wait 6 months, a year or longer.....I need some way to transport my bike to the races now. That is why I am looking into a solution.

I really do not want a roof rack...I might be forced into it. My wife does not want to see that shit on top of the car either....you know its all about

Anyway's I am also still waiting on Thule & Yakima to offer up a fit kit for the 2 series. I am told they will be signing off on one soon but I really want a hitch mount

Is there actually a request form from Curt? If so we could spam the crap out of them. ;-)

I assume you know about: (1) The built in BMW roof system; (2) The Seasucker? Of the two, I am considering Seasucker for my Trek Domane because the Seasucker goes on and off so easily.

Roof racks generally suck - wind noise, debris falling off the bike onto your roof, difficulty in installation and removal.

The Seasucker stuff I've never seen, seems interesting but not sure I'd feel as comfortable mounting a 40 lb downhill bike to that.

The hitch is great since it's a 1 bolt on/off operation, doesn't add any wind noise, can accommodate 2-3 bikes easily.

I did see the BMW rack posted in the 2 series vert shots but it isn't clear if/when it is order able. Also, a Curt hitch is ~$150 and will reuse an existing rack. The BMW solution will probably be $500+ and wouldn't work on any other cars in the future.

I'll send an e-mail to Curt as well. Maybe if they get enough hits they'll consider it.

Keep me on your list.

Got a Thule 1 1/4" bike rack that holds 4. I could go the roof rack direction but too noisy, poorer mileage, more difficult to load/unload and I just know I'll forget it's up there and drive into an underground garage sometime and trash my bikes/car roof.

For now, anytime the wife and I want to head to the mountains for a biking getaway, we throw the rack on the back of her 10 year old Lexus (yawn!).

It's so sad. My faithful little M235i has dutifully been driving me through bumper-to-bumper LA traffic for a week but is now left on the driveway whimpering for a jaunt on mountain roads.

I'm in CA, so there could be some logistics in shipping, etc. But keep me posted re this.

Thanks!

Hello, I know your post is now pretty old but I'm wondering whether you managed to get a tow bar for your M235i ? I'm hesitating between an M235i and a 225d because BMW supplies a tow bar for the latter. I'd rather have an M235i though and would be very interested to know if there's a solution. Thanks !

Corinne - I believe you are looking for a trailer hitch. The tow bar is installed in the front so your car can be pulled easily. A tow bar is available for the M235i.

I am pretty sure the trailer hitch from the 225d will fit the M235i but BMW has not approved use on the M235i. You will not get a permission - if you country has specific regulations for hitches. You will also void BMW warranty for sure should something happen. If you only carry a bicycle in the back the risk is probably acceptable.

Hi Heitzer,
Yes, sorry, I mean the thingy for pulling a trailor ! I'm thinking that the reason BMW don't supply one on the M235i is because this car has twin exhaust pipes, one on each side and that the silencer prevents one from mounting a trailor hitch... which was why I was wondering if it was technically feasible or not (putting aside the legality of it).

According to some german forums, in which this has been extensively discussed, the hitch will fit just fine. The hitch is secured to the bumper section and having looked under the M235i and 228i I don't see a reason why it shouldn't fit the M235i with dual exhaust.

Here is a scheme that shows how it is installed.

Hope you get the M235i.. Soo much fun .

Well, that is MOST useful ! Thank you very much ! If it's solid, I think it's worth taking the risk of towing a small trailor occasionally. I can't believe the police would know it's not original equipment on a 235i..... M235i here I come !!!

Corinne - I really hope you will like the M235i -it is playful and gets you involved and is still an excellent daily driver. That said, I just noticed your eclectic car collection (which I envy a lot) and are worried you need more .

Yes my cars have been quite exotic over the years, however the M235i will be to replace my daily driver 330d which now has 286,000 kms on it. The Lotus remains firmly in my garage... until the day I decide to change it for an Ariel Atom ;-

Towing hitch is not available on M135i/M235i models.
Homologation is without towing hitch capabilities so, even if you can install a towing hitch, you'll not allowed to drive it.

I don't think that this is due to technical reasons due to larger exhaust since there was some M2 prototypes with traitler hitch on road (and trailer hitch is bolt on bumper mounts) but more on car marketing position...

Interesting thing: Trailer hitch is available for M235i Convertible only...

See M235i F23 Convertible ETK

But not available for M235i F22...

My situation is not to tow but to attach a 1.25 receiver bike carrier that was on my 1 series. Curt hitch made it:
