Tire Size for MY15 228i MSport with ZTR Track Package
My apologies if this topic came up before but I cannot find the exact information I am looking for.
I just took delivery of a 2015 228i MSport with the Track Package in the US. The Tires are Michelin Pilot Super Sport non-RFT, which I expected. But the tires are 245/35/ZR18 all around (SQUARE SET-UP) from the Factory. But not the 225s that come with the All-Seasons. Is this new? Is everyone with the ZTR package in the 228i getting a square set up standard from the factory? I am very happy that this is so, since I plan on AutoXing and doing some Driving Schools and the square set up makes the car much easier to drive (improved turn in, less understeer). Appreciate any information the forum members can share! |

The ordering guide says 225 front for ZTR so looks like you got an error. Do they rub? Supposedly 245s are very hard to fit up front.

wow... that's weird... can you take a picture? I don't believe it
wonder if they mounted 245 on the 7.5 rim but with 45 ET that shouldn't work... you need at least 42 ET |

Verified they are definitely 245/35s. Will post pics when
I figure out how to upload them. So, now is decision time. If the wheels and tire combo are for the rear (8" wheels) and the clearances are okay I would like to keep them. But if they put 245s on 7.5" wheels that is not safe and they will have to replace the tires. I guess I will have to pull a wheel to see what size it is and then check with one of the local enthusiast tire shops to see if they think there is enough clearance. Then back to the dealer to try and get a new set of wheels and tires if necessary. Ideally I would like to keep the extra wheels but doubt they will go for it. Wish me luck! |

Just came back from the local performance tire/chassis shop. They confirmed the wheel sizes are identical on all four ends. We checked clearance left and right and didn't hear or see any rubbing. I am running in Comfort mode on the street and haven't noticed any rubbing from the suspension travel. The tires also don't show anything out of the ordinary.
So, how do I know if I can keep it this way or not? Are there minimum clearances i can use to verify I will be safe? |

I guess I could try to fit the rear in the front and see what happens |

They are the 8" stock wheel that comes with the Track Pack. Only know the offsets based on info from BMW. Don't know how to measure it.
From the order guide. These are 21L on 461M 18" alloy ferric grey 461M wheel w/ non-runflat Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires Front: 18x7.5, 225/40 R18 Rear: 18x8.0, 245/35 R18 |

Master Tech at dealer (who also races) said I should be fine with the 245/35s with 8" wheels on the front. He said that several of his frends are runnig up to 255s on the front at VIR.
So, looks like I am the only factory stock car with 245s all around! Here is the part number and they are ET52s. Genuine BMW Light Alloy Rim 8Jx18 Et:52 - 36117852490 - F22 |

those must be something like ET40 else they would hit the strut... try putting your hand between the tire and the strut and see how much gap there is You can run 255 but you would need more camber else they would rub the fender when loaded |

Wow... this is actually pretty cool haha. Looks like they set you up with a 'slightly' aggressive track setup from the factory

Update at 800 miles
All looks fine at 800 miles. I am going to take it in for an "Alignment" check and have them look for rub marks on the struts, tires and wheel wells. I haven't felt anything yet and the tires look normal. Very interesting that a 52 Offset is working on the front....

This makes ZERO sense. As mentioned before, it wouldn't work......mathematically.
I'm not buying that you have 18x8 et52's on the front. The wheel itself would be scraping the shit out of the strut. BTW, I have a 15 228i Msport/THP car. I'm running 18x8.5 et45 wheels square with a 5mm spacer in the front specifically for clearance......with 245/35 MPSS's. Something is not adding up........?????? |

Getting pre tech inspection for HPDE, will try to take pics while on lift. There is about 1 inch of clearance between the inside of the tire and the strut.

WRONG SIZE TIRES, RIGHT SIZE WHEELS!!
So, I definitely have 7.5x18 Wheels on the front of the car. That is why there hasn't been any signs of rubbing. The feedback I received on the forum was nagging at me so I finally took the wheel off the front and had a look. Low and behold I have 245/35/ZR18 Tires mounted on 7.5x18 Wheels. So the folks at the factory mounted the wrong tires, not a complete rear set. I checked with the dealer to confirm if this is a safety issue (does tire need at least 8" wide rim?) to avoid the tire rolling over or breaking the bead at the wrong time! They said no, that the 7.5" Wheel and 245 would be fine. In actuality the extra width of the tire would protect the wheel because of it sticking out. So now I need to decide whom to trust. TireRack's website states an 8" width is the minimum for the tire. Michelin USA also stated I need at leadt 8 "s, BMW Service Manager verbally says I am fine. ??????? |

No worries, I'm sure the BMW service manager knows more than the tire manufacturer and Tire Rack. Seriously, listen to Michelin and Tire Rack!

+2 this is how your tires look like (disregard the wheel offset, i set it that way so you can see the difference easier) http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php...t2=100#content
I wouldn't take that wheel anywhere near a track....or even a fast off-ramp. I don't think handling would be any good with that setup either... Tell them to put the right tire or engage BMW NA tell them you feel it's a liability |

Thanks for all the input. I am going to have the dealer swap out the 245s for 225/40/ZR18s. I will feel much safer especially if I AutoX. Other issue is that technically I wouldn't be able to run stock series with 245's on the front.
But mostly I don't want the hassle of arguing with BMW in the future if the tire ever comes off the bead and damages the tire, wheel or car. However I am going to try to buy the used 245s and use them for track tires or to replace the rears when they wear out. Thanks again. UPDATE. Dealer sent request to BMW USA to replace the tires. Update: After a month BMW USA declined the claim. Told my dealer that they obtained the car from another dealer not directly from the facory so they were not responsible. My dealer replaced the front tires out of their pocket, sold me the two 245/35 tires for $200 and is appealing the ruling BMW made. I understand BMW's point, but I see no reason why anyone would swap out the rears for the fronts on purpose. It had to be a mistake made back at the facory when they were mounting the tires. I feel very good about my sales rep and the GM at the dealer who stepped up and addressed my need even though they may end up eating $300-400 of expense.
