Typical internet, mixed opinions on just about any subject.
I just finished reading where they said the 228i sounded better than other n20's, and the steering was fine. Its not a race car, but a fun daily driver. Last edited by captpn; 02-28-2014 at 12:33 PM.. |

Damn you people are harsh. I just hate typing on a iphone.
I'm really struggling on making this purchase. Loved the looks of the car but the steering at least in comfort mode is way too numb, a little better in sport mode but does not provide feedback like my 128. The engine, well just seem a bit soul less. And it has that DFI clatter. So I'm struggling, how bad do I want a manual transmission.

I just drove a 228i base model and the M235i. I thought the 228 engine and tranny were awesome, the 235 more awesome. I was originally sure about getting manual tranny, but this ZF 8sp is a great tranny and I may just get it. The 228 suspension/handling was poor, about Camry level. Steering too soft and suspension wallowing all over the place. M235 suspension and steering were way better, much more like my 99M3. I'll be doing a 228 with the MSport package for sure. Also drove a manual tranny 335X drive with sport package--nice but still favoring the automatic.

I believe that the sport line and M Sport have the same suspension and tires but not the MSport body modifications etc. The car I drove was not sport line, so sport line should be OK.

I just got to test drive a 228i and while the base level suspension isn't the best, it performed far better than I expected it to. I didn't push it too hard on salty roads and a brand new engine, but I did give my CA bit of a workout holding the grab handle. It was certainly wallowy on big direction changes, but felt pretty well controlled and comfortable. I had to wrench it pretty dramatically to really get it out of shape. If I hadn't ordered an M-Sport, I might be disappointed with the suspension, but only just. I'm confident that a little lower and stiffer sprung and damped will satisfy what I want from this car.

I did my test drive of a base 228 yesterday with Step-auto, and first one to drive it. Agreed the suspension is very soft and I also thought tire under inflation. But I was really concerned with a test drive move that I do which is basically a linear throttle application during a turn onto an on-ramp; simulates an apex-to-exit under mid-to-full throttle. This car got very squirrelly and modulated the rear brakes/DSC to cause a side to side motion, requiring throttle modulation. Even without an LSD this should not happen. Was easy to reproduce then I thought maybe it's a "early programming" issue with the auto, DSC, or just the narrow 205 tires.
I hope the M-sport version I'm considering is more planted. Compared to driving the M235, in the same test, it was very smooth and controlled. But even with other more stock BMWs this was never an issue. Just FYI.
