2 series initial impressions

In response to my initial post, my Hyundai is a second car. I have driven more and forgotten more BMW's and Mercedes in the the last 20 years than most of the members here will ever remember!

Having said that, I indeed was initially expecting more from these cars than the press led me to believe. Being overly sensitive to the cars steering capabilities, the m235i in sport mode, while being quite good, still has not reached the pinnacle of accuracy of say, a 3 series coupe with hydraulic steering. My salesperson who drove with me agreed also. He used to own an M135i and still he thought its steering characteristics were a bit more impressive than the M235 we drove .

For the fanatics here, this does not disgrace the 2 series as judged by the reactions of my post . Indeed, EPS is the wave of the future; how discerning a car company can get it to perform is a marketing/ engineering decision. I am hoping to run these cars again to ascertain if my first impressions were as accurate as I thought. As I inched my way down towards a braking stop, the on center wheel did indeed give me an inch or so of center play, left and right. Overall, however, there is little to criticize as to the cars steering and handling; particularly to the SOMEWHAT less discerning drivers.

First year of EPS for the M235i,,,not to shabby... coming from a 135i ...Test drove the M235i twice and found the car improved in just about every area and to be honest as much as i loved the Hydraulic steering in my 135i i did find it slightly heavy at times. The M3 had adjustable steering which i really liked.. The M235i although lighter steering feel is pretty damn good from my experience at normal speeds on the road...but everyting else about the car to me is an upgrade from the 1 series....That's why i am down for the M2... What bothered me more was getting out of my 135i was getting into my 1991 Miata and getting blown away each time by the Miata's steering quickness and handling ...

I think bmw left the 235 a bit soft for a lot of reasons...they need to leave some room for other higher models and the upcoming M2

They made the m235i with a wider track but didnt leave a wider fender for a more normal wheel offset...this was a big hint that there will be an M2. Everything else will be a little softer than traditional M cars.

I actually like the softer ride as a DD...soft as comparing to M cars, not that the m235 is soft by any means

Op, are you not getting enough attention at home? I think starting one self-important shit thread was probably sufficient, no?

You stated: He used to own an M135i and still he thought its steering characteristics were a bit more impressive than the M235 we drove. Did you mean 1M Coupe? The M135i was never sold here, and the 1M was a sportier higher spec car than the 235i with M3 suspension and tires so I owuld expect it to feel and handle better (though in testing the 235i is only off by .1 secs and .1 g in grip.

Maybe he took my post as a poke....when it is just a individuals subjective opinion. I didn't mean anything from it...honest

"I had a '11 Sonata SE prior to getting my current '09 128 w/sport pack and I cannot even compare them to each other. Don't get me wrong the Sonata was a very nice car and straight line acceleration was good but not as near sporty or razor sharp handling as the 128. Then I drove a M235 and bam....... i became a junkie on crack. I even thought the servo steering was way better then the Sonata was...period. I must admit I do love the steering on my 128 and if I had a 135 I would probably keep it but i don't and am getting the M235 for my next fix"

oh, you didn't see the thread on 1) why the 2er is uglier in person than in photos and 2) his Hyundai has less "center wheel play"?
