M235i Wastegate Rattle

Hi everybody,

i have a wastegate rattle on my M235i since few months. I tried to run everyday without paying attention but i can't definitely. This metalic sound between 1000 and 2000 RPMs in town resonate between the walls and it makes me crazy now. It only appears on low RPMs with progressive acceleration.

I went to BMW dealer who changed the electric actuator valve of the wastegate but without succes, rattle is still present.

I know the massive wastegate problems of the N54 and many people tought that the electric actuator on N55 solved the problem but i see that i'm not the only one having rattle on N55. People on internet have the same problem on M135i, M235i and 335i with the N55.

BMW confirmed that this unpleasant metalic sound came from wastegate.

Because i'm under warranty, they will try to get the turbo replacement for free asking BMW warranty.

I'm sure there is a way to adjust this wastegate to avoid full turbo replacement.

I found online a note showing that the wastegate can be adjusted. I know that this note explain how to adjust the wastegate as factory setting but i already rode a post from a member on his E90 explaining how to adjust it on a N54 : http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=595249

And i'm guessing if i could try the same thing with this kind of wastegate actuator on my M235i.

Thank you !

The Electronic Wastegate on the M235i is a little bit different, as you can see here:

I'm not sure if this is your issue?

Yes my turbo is exactly like your photo.

The 1st photo i posted is from a N20 but it's to illustrate because it's the same " system " on the N55.

Looks like only 1 nut that can be tightened, can't imagine that's the issue, but it's possible I guess..

A lot of N55s have minor wastegate rattles, especially when cold or when you're listening for it in a garage or enclosed area. The rattle is not the same issue as the one that afflicted the N54s as it never seems to get worse with the N55.

The thing is the car didn't rattle from 0 kms to 40 000 kms ( today ).

And since the rattling noise, i have a lag at around 2000 RPMs. I immediately noted the lag when the rattle began.

I think there is a real bad issue about the wastegate system.

don't forget to mention "unsafe" throttle input. That will light the fire.

I left the car yesterday to the BMW dealer and they phoned me today to say that turbo will be changed under warranty

The BMW aftermarket specialist at my BMW dealer is very cool and he was obligated to lie to the warranty service saying the turbo got a serious power problem when running with a bad noise. He did that because after the turbo diagnosis the warranty asked, no issues were detected, no power problem, no CEL.

The rattle and lag came only at few RPMs or at idle and so in load when static at neutral, no issues detected.

I'll update when i will get the car back.

So finally got the turbo replaced.

Sounds really better now !

I still hear it a little but very acceptable now and i think it's because of the titanium of my Akrapovic line which accentuates the metalic sound.

I ordered a BMC air filter to test if the car will "breath" better because i think that Fabspeed Sport Cat downpipe + the Akrapovic M2 line demand a little more air. I feel sometimes a little lack or air and i rode it could also have consequences on the wastegate.
