Wow! Looks like an M2 prototype to me.
If the M2 looks anything like this then I'm definitely getting one.
Looks so much better than the bloated M4. I haven't been this excited about a BMW since the E46 M3.

It worked out OK last time. There is limited crossover between M3/4 buyers and 1M /M2 buyers, so I don't really think one group steals many sales from the other. As long as BMW under-rates the M2 as much as they did the 1M, M3/4 buyers will be able to justify the higher price to themselves. And few will be the wiser, if history is any guide.

That's a 100hp gap. Big enough to drive a truck through.

Look at how granularly Porsche splits up their market segmentation -- sometimes by increments of 5hp.

Wow if I was loaded I would have one in a heart beat.

Great food for thought though- Imagine if this projects helps pave the way for an M2, once the M3/4 excitement has worn off a bit. The thought of a 2er body wrapped around the new F80 chassis a la 1M. And rather than using the S55, they could do an S20 with all the neat cooling features and anti lag system of the new S55. Say right around 350 hp. Would have the benefit of a lighter package, and a tightly wound 4 cyl.

And before anyone says "I wouldn't want some 4 popper in an M2 when the M235i has the 3.0 6 cyl" remember that history often repeats and that a 325i had a 6 cyl motor when the e30 M3 came out with its famous 4 cyl motor.

Or just stuff the s55 in the M2

This is not a ZF, people need to stop saying that. An torque convertor automatic CANNOT handle the heat generated of a racing environment (drag racing not withstanding).

It is a DCT, I bet $100000000000

I like the thought, I just don't believe they can get the lag low enough with that amount of boost to be truly satisfying. The lighter the chassis the quicker the response, and hence the quicker the throttle response you want to fully exploit it. So while I'd love the light weight of the four, I'd really want the torque of the S55 six. And the linearity and throttle response of the S85 eight. That's not too much to ask, is it?

Well stock 1Ms are generally down 25 rwhp on M3s (and up a bit over 100 wtq) on a dynojet. So you tell me, did you get the extra 80 hp BMW promised? Not trying to start a pissing match, just saying most M3 owners both don't know this... and may or may not care.

My quote function is messed up, but to Pete above, I feel exactly the same as you we want something that hasn't been dreamed up yet. But what if the displacement of a n20 based 4 cyl was beefed up to like 2.4L, through the use of larger piston bores, not a stroker. Could in theory keep a higher redline, while getting the increased low end torque out of the motor allowing for a bigger huffer. Granted, the way BMW must modify existing motors to make things make sense to the bean counters that may not be possible. Way back in the late 80's GM (Oldsmobile) had a modified HO Quad4 with a turbo that made like 250 hp. given the dramatic advances, I feel like there's something here. Even AMG has that hopped up 4 popper that is getting some nice reviews, but that thing is running some pretty insane boost right off the showroom floor.

What's more, straight 4's are inherently unbalanced motors, so modern 4 cylinder motors are encumbered with balance shafts and other weight/complexity adding measures to make them smooth and sound less bad.

May very well be. But BMW has gone to great lengths to detail every feature that's been added or revised from the standard M235i. Why would they arbitrarily choose the transmission as the only component not to highlight in the press release, if it is in fact different?
