If u look at picture there is water in the intake...but not much
it means hydrolock ? means totaled?

50cc of water in a single cylinder is enough to cause damage. As the filter was wet, some water got in (probably from a bow wave splashing above your bumper and into the air intake). The next step will need to be a compression and general health check on the engine, to see if everything is within spec. Compression readings out of spec will indicate a bent connecting rod.

Maybe? Engines that can't make compression crank easily too.

Best case electronics get wet, no major damage, dry things out and you're ok. You already know worse case. Just have to wait for the dealership to let you know.

It takes full submersion of the intake for the engine to suck in a column of water to cause hydrolock. Science - How does it work?

I have a hard time believing the OP hydrolocked this motor unless he went flying into the water and pushed a wave of water to just below the top of the grilles (intake opening is at that height and point). My guess is the filter got saturated and pulled in water droplets, flaking out the MAF, boost sensor, and getting some water in the compression chamber and soaked the plugs, but not enough to hydrolock it. The BMW tech will likely yank the intake snorkel and spark plugs and cycle the motor over to see if water comes out.

Now if the OP went fast through the water and pushed a wave of water high up on the bumper, well then.....dumb. Insurance, at least in the US, covers this kind of stuff.

Note: Look at the bright silver Civic in the photo and see how high the water is up on its bumper. Go fast enough and bad things happen.

When the car stopped the first thing that happened was that alarm ignition switching on
Could that be a defense mechanism?

How exactly would you propose helping? OP did something stupid and the pros need to fix it. No like he's asking for help installing something on his car we could actually offer assistance with.

At this point it's a waiting game and OP is looking for someone to blow sunshine up his ass and tell him everything will be ok based on no information other than the fact he made an unsuccessful attempt to ford a river. As you correctly pointed out the only people who can help at this point are mechanics at the dealer.

I wonder what the insurance company position is when the driver decides to drive into standing water versus a car just being caught in a flood situation.

You guys are harsh. This does not look any deeper than any one of hundreds of fords that are on public roads in many countries.

Personally I'm watching this thread with great concern because the difference between a puddle and flood can sometime be a matter of minutes. I don't want my car stopping simply because of some rain.

I would have absolutely done the same as the original poster if I was sure that there was no current. That water level should NEVER stop a modern car and indicates something majorly wrong to me.

Of course you don't go LOOKING for these kind of driving conditions but the car should NOT have fucking stopped. Stressing the poor guy out like that is not coming across as particularly cool. Although the shark pic was hilarious

like the car was splashed with water i would say for a good 3 to 5 secs then
no water was hitting anywhere near the engine or anything after...
I thought BMW had a system that shut off engine as protection if water gets in...

I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to say it. I could see a difference in $ coming to you for something like an actual flood versus playing u-boat commander by choice as well.

In this case though I think you'd have an argument for extremely poor judgment vs willful destruction.

What couls be the issue?
Is my engine finished?
Back in very early 2015, quite a few of us (Canucks) had their ordered BMWs and Minis stuck for months in the Halifax port-of-entry because of an unusual number of severe ice storms which led the vehicles being exposed to excessive standing water and/or salt for an extended period.
All of us eventually took delivery of those cars (mine came in April) and all was good - or so we thought.
Transport Canada (a Fed Gov't agency) issued a recall in late July 2015 stating that there could be potential electrical and other mechanical issues as a result of exposure to water or salt or both (see recall notice url below):
BMW had experts inspect each vehicle during the late summer of 2015. Some were already showing signs of corrosion - and those vehicles were pulled immediately to be scrapped (crushed). Mine didn't show any signs (yet), so I was allowed to continue to drive it until a replacement ordered vehicle could be delivered to me.
Eventually all 2966 affected vehicles were pulled and scrapped. I was told that while it cost BMW a ton of dough, they were concerned that 4 - 6 years down the road, even those which had shown no initial ill effects from standing in water, could potentially have electrical and other issues.

I think every time he starts another sentence with "like", we get to stress him out in return!
