I'll skip Sunoco from now on I only use them when I'm desperate and have to grab some gas near my work place. 90% of the time I fill up with Shell. Good to know Conoco is on that top tier list. I have one close to my home.

Interestingly, the fine print says 95 RON is recommended here in EU, but 98 RON was used to rate the engine (power, torque, consumption etc.). So, clearly the engine can take advantage of higher octane; I'm always using 98 RON...

Thanks for the link/reminder - I'd have sworn Sunoco was one of the tops, so good to keep in mind (they are common around here). Printing their list for the glovebox.

Is 98 RON in Europe better than 93 here in the US? I Wonder why ours is so much lower.

It's not E10 over there. So yeah, better.

Added a decal after going Dinan just in case I'm at a full service only station in NJ just to be extra safe for zero confusion.

Just got back form a weeks golf holiday in Orlando and rented a 228i ragtop from Sixt.
I was surprised that Shell V-Power in Florida was 93 octane, but had ethanol, while back in the home we have 91 octane Shell V-Power but with no ethanol.
Anyone know the performance diff between the 2.

BTW, I had forgotten just how much fun the 228i is. I could really push it hard and make it sing. The M235i maybe gets there a shade quicker, but with less drama ( and maybe a bit less fun). Kinda made me miss my old 228i.

I had a 228 loaner a while back. Compared to my 235 (now Dinan) it's was honestly about more engaging to drive. You had to work for it more and it was rewarding to really squeeze the performance out of it. 235 like you said seems a bit point and shoot easy by comparison. Granted I prefer the 235 but the 228 is more engaging at times depending on roads.

I like it. I was at a full service station and caught the pump jockey filling my car with 87 (instead of 93). He got a couple of gallons in before I looked back.

IMHO, 93 should have been "93 or Higher" and the OTHER option should have been "87 and Lower"

On a stock engine, I wonder how much the timing gets pushed back to handle octane lower than 89. I think if it only caused say a 10hp or even 15hp drop, I'd use 87. Now if I were always hot rodding the car I'd always use 91 or higher.

BTW, some of you guys crack me up.. I can guarantee the percentage of people running 87 is way higher than when you see in this poll. You're on an Enthusiasts site, so people are going to be more tuned to how their car performs. Personally, I know 2 people in my neighborhood that only run 87 in their Bimmers. Both say they've never had a problem with 87 and can't tell the difference when using a higher octane gas. Neither have ever had a engine failure. One owns and the other leases...

As for detergents ... A higher octane gas of the same brand will not have more detergents. Do you remember, until the mid '90's, when gas companies would run commercials that said to use their premium gas because it had the most/best detergents? From what I remember, around '95, those commercials stopped because the Feds mandated new gas detergent laws. I'm pretty sure that the same detergent package now has to be used for all octane levels of the same brand of gas. All top tier gas has over the others is they have even more detergents than the fed minimum...and again, it's not based on octane level, it's by brand.

Perhaps the "Octane" is on their endangered species list?
