Apple Watch 3 - will it play nice w BMW?

Anyone have any idea if I could BT the new watch to the car and have all the same functionality to make calls and whatnot? Would love to be able to leave the phone itself home on occasion but stay connected.

If the AW3 is Bluetooth enabled, I don't see why not ... the larger issues may be:
- The specific iOS that Apple Watch uses, which may not be recognized by older iDrive software, and
- Bluetooth 5.0 and if it's backward compatible. I would think it is, but sometimes different BT protocols don't work well together.

I highly suggest waiting 1-2 months before trying any new iOS or gizmo on the car. Let others do the experimentin'.

Ha - I was planning to do that exactly and get one for Christmas. Luckily I have a buddy who owns a Verizon store will hit him up one day to pair his watch with my car for a test case.

Would be great if it works though. Won't work on my car but would also be awesome if like the i3/8 the watch could serve as my key.

One ring - errr watch - to rule them all.

This poor bastard should have heeded your advice and waited for a bit!

HAR! How do magnets work on a nano with an aluminum case? ...

... but actually, those magnets would work with the AW perfectly since the back is stainless steel, IIRC ...

Def. report back!

Some cases are stainless some aluminum if I'm not mistaken.

Really wish they'd incorporate inductive charging (is that the right term) to power the thing through the heat coming off the wearer's wrist.

Yikes - looks like only 1 hour of talk time with LTE enabled. This just got a whole lot less interesting.

What got a whole lot more interesting: the wireless-charging-from-body-heat idea ...

C'mon, Apple. Get it back in GEAR!

There's a crowd funded company called Matrix trying to do that for a smart watch. Perfect name for humans powering machines. That said I doubt it would support the power demands of voice.

My other great idea of the day aimed mainly at road warriors - integrate the charging pad into the lid of my MacBook. So when I get to my hotel I can plug the computer in, leave phone and watch and whatever else sitting on top of it to charge.

That's one cord to carry for all the devices.

I believe it can. I had my watch 2 paired to the car at one point, for some reason, but the car would get confused on which device to pair to regarding music. I ended up unpairing it but unless something changes, it should be technically possible on the 3.

Well, tried pairing the Series 3 watch with the car and no luck. After failing on my own stopped at the dealer and they couldn't get it to work either. Will keep you guys posted.

The watch is awesome and I am very happy with it, but as of now pairing with car does not seem possible.

AFAIK the LTE in the 3 is basically only there as a "Backup" in case your phone isn't around. Apple still intends the watch to be a companion to the phone, it's just that this allows you to go running with just the watch and not need to bring a phone.

Yes and no - the watch should be able to operate as a fully standalone device. Yes it uses the phone to do heavy lifting if it's available, but when out of range the watch is capable of doing anything on its own.

So in theory if I am using my watch to make calls and it is capable of pairing with BT devices (ie headphones) I had hoped it could pair with the car just for audio in/out and still control everything through watch as that was more than I thought possible. So turn the car into a BT speaker / mic and that's it.

BMW is about 18-24 mths behind on technology:

My 2016 X5 can’t pair with my 2017 Chamberlain garage door opener or my 2018 iwatch 3.

I hate Audi and GM but they can do those things!
