Something new popped up in the lower status field of the info block in the upper right corner of my Nav screen today. It's been counting up from 4% when I first saw it to 26% by the time I got to the office.

Can't find it in the manual. At a guess, that's a graphic depicting a folded map and a "refresh" symbol, so I suppose it could be downloading some update to the system. Does it do that without prompting?

Sound like and also by your what i drive that you have the new NBT-Evo idrive that automatically downloads new maps to your car via LTE.

So that's what i presume it is. Cant say for sure as I don't have that IDrive Version. Even with LTE it would take a little bit to actually download the maps hence the counter.

Yeah its the over the air map updates. They take a while, at least on my car they did.

Is your EVO version different? See mine below. Still surprised that your car randomly got lucky, while mine produced one day later should have gotten the no-OTA version.

Do you always see a 4G symbol when in Connected Drive it or does it vary based on network coverage?

I not sure I've seen a 3G symbol. I hardly use the Connected Drive features. I have seen *no* symbol, in one of several cell deadzones I drive through from time to time during one of the times I tried to use it.

Subject to the vagaries of my memory, I'll throw a different screen up tonight when I drive home and see what goes by.

No map update on my F23 with HU_NBT2. Not sure why it started downloading on yours. Mine is a 03/15 build.

Me neither... It is too slow and unreliable.
The EVO unit we have is clearly the same with all its Navigation features. Thus, unlikely they differ in the OTA updates.

I have to watch for the update process that you already witnessed. At my BMW dealer they were clueless regarding confirming what is installed.

I clearly prefer that over hard drive updates.

You know, it's a damn good thing I don't tend to try to use BMW Online, because for my 30 minute drive home today, I had no signal / no connection for 29 of the 30 minutes. It connected one time, brought up the sub menu, and then lost the signal again.

FWIW, it showed either the "4G" icon or an unlocked padlock. With there being no service, I'm not sure that's dispositive.

I'll try again in the AM.

It was working this morning along the whole route, going the other way in nasty storms. Nothing but 4G symbols the whole way. There's repeatability for you.

I have not seen a 4G symbol and have yet to witness an OTA map update on mine. While we clearly have the same NAV version and therefore likely the same system overall, it is not impossible that the NAV version and cellular components are independent.

Once you show other than 2015.2 maps referred to in your system information and I don't I will know for sure.

It seems I solved the issue:
Within the NAV version screen is an embedded settings menu. There you need to activate (!!) the OTA updates by selecting the appropriate region.

Now , I still only see a 3G connection so far but this at least proves that this is the OTA NAV version!

Now we'll see when the update will happen.

My %complete count got up into the 70s, then started over. May be downloading multiple packages, so I'll go take a look at that menu as well.

As I tried this yesterday it seemed that you can only select one region at a time, ie if you travel you would have to switch the region setting to get the latest update. No idea how agile this will react though.

Yup, found that screen this morning, already on for New England and NY/NJ. I'm guessing my CA turned it on, as he commented that the car would get OTA map updates when I picked it up.

Still don't know why it restarted the count from 0% yesterday. From what I've seen, I get about 25% movement in my half hour commute, assuming it has a signal. I'll need to pay more attention this time as the count gets higher.

Mine finished up the other day -- Nav version looks like this now. 2015 F22 with a build date of April 2015 -- I think it came over with yours on Independence II, Zooks. I only get 3G in the ConnectedDrive screens, though.

OTA update happened today for the region selected. Took about 40 min and asked for system reboot in the end.
All in 3G. Will select a few other neighboring regions tomorrow and see how that goes.

Mine's still downloading again. Then again, with 11 states in the regions, including NY, NJ, and MA metro areas, I expect it's somewhat large.

Well, you can only select a region at a time. Makes sense to limit the amount of data transferred each time, but a bit inconvenient for neighboring states , eg Ohio and Indiana are in different regions.
