@ BMW M2

It would have been nice if you had asked me.
This color table I have made.
For a German forum.

Sorry about that. I have only placed a link to the German forum. This would have recognized you as the owner. The admins or mods have edited my post without asking (as always). Here the property of others is always routine defining as the property of bimmerpost or 2addicts.

Well, as a new member, here we go with my first message. I too am REALLY dissapointed with BMW obstructing one's choice as to colours, engines, wheels and trim. I'm waiting for the series 2 convertible to come out so as to replace my 12 year old BMW 330d. My first choice was for an M235i but you can't have a tow bar on those... and I need one. WHY do they assume someone with a sporty car won't want to pull a boat ? So, since I couldn't go to extremes (M235i), I thought I'd better go for a practical choice in view of the high fuel prices here in France, and get a 225d. Only there doesn't seem to BE a 225d convertible. Only a 220d whereas the 225d IS available on the coupé. Next... the colour. I want something bright such as an Austin Yellow or a Dakar Yellow and am willing to pay for it - but, no, it seems I can't have them either. A search for BMW Individual Colours only shows up various permutations of silver, blue and brown. Bah ! OK, so how about Valencia Orange then ? Nein, you can't have that with the M-Sport trim ! Where's my freedom of choice here ? I'm willing to fork out a lot of money on a car and the manufacturer is forcing me to select a drab boring colour. Maybe the solution is to have it wrapped - like this liquid gold Lamborghini Aventador which looks brilliant. Anyone here know how much it costs to wrap a 2 series ?

For a little extra money, you can get your car in whatever color you want.

I wonder what would happen if you told your dealer you'll pay full MSRP if they make your 235 in VO. They would probably figure out a way to make it happen.

Not a dealer issue. The body-in-white could be produced as the framed bodies all go through the same paint booth and there is a VO-capable gun. But, other necessary parts don't exist. The front and rear fascias are produced by a supplier and shipped to the plant already painted. The fascias are not produced in VO. You could buy an entirely white car and have it repainted here or wrap it in 3M Fiery Orange film which is a near perfect match as "recycledAlva" did with his white car, as in this photo, posted elsewhere, with beautiful results!

But isn't the basic BMW Individual paint cost $3k? That's around the savings one could get by getting the car near invoice, definitely with ED. Individual painted cars are painted in the same factory but on a different line.

Yes, but that is the cost for a paint program for which they have planned, both in the plant's paint shop and with the painted-parts supply base, as "exclusive" as they may make it seem. That program is not based on a last-minute consumer choice of a color BMW is not prepared to support. And, again, it's not the paint shop which is the constraint. The issue is that the supplier-painted parts which come into the plants already in-color are not available in the current program. I had a chat with a BMW rep at the NAIAS about VO, as this color is of interest to me, and got confirmation that fascias were an issue for not having even a 228i MSport in VO.

Also, the economics are a bit different. BMW sells the vehicle to the dealer at a set wholesale delivered price (with holdback a separate matter). Whether the individual dealer sells the vehicle to the retail buyer at MSRP or at invoice, BMW is paid the same price by the independent business-person dealer. So, offering more money to the dealer just lines his pocket and has no incentive effect on BMW in Germany.

Justify? I got the car I got BECAUSE of the VO. It was the only color I was interested in.

recycledAlva's car is just awesome! I love everythinbg about it and I even like the Fiery Orange better than VO. This is a perfectly done car.

That orange is absolutely fabulous ! I got two quotes for wrapping here in France: € 5500 and € 3600. A total rip off in my view.
