Automatic Braking...any personal experiences?

I'm about to put my M240i back on the road (only 700 km's so far), and was reviewing the manual when I came across the "Automatic Braking" function of the car. I was just wondering how well it works, and if anyone has fortunately/unfortunately had any experience with this feature?

Thanks!

Are you talking about Driver Assist Plus? If so, I'd love to see how well it works because I ordered it thinking if it works any where close to Subaru's system, it'll be worth every penny.

I do have experience with the Subaru system called Eye Sight and it works very very well.. It prevented an accident with a deer and just testing it.... it just flat out worked.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how effective the "Front-end collision warning with City Braking function," and "Person warning with City light braking function" is. Maybe it's just the phrase "light braking" that got me thinking does this car actually stop itself, or mostly just prime the brakes? If you're about to hit a pedestrian doesn't BMW think the brakes should be "fully applied," even without driver intervention? How "light" is the braking?

This is a great question for a test drive. I did that while shopping for my 228, with a Volvo. Very unsettling to just let a car head towards something [another new car, in this case], but it was their suggestion, and it worked well (reminded me of my first times using ABS, fighting my old programming to modulate and threshold brake). DK if BMW is the 'full stop' version, but Volvo does (at <40mph or thereabouts).

I haven't triggered it in my M240i (only 1900 miles on it). Last year I rented an X1 in Munich and was looking around too much while driving in traffic, and the car in front of me went from rolling at 15-20 mph to stopped. I still tell myself I would have been able to stop in time myself, but the warning went off and by the time I got my foot on the brake pedal I could already feel it pulsing from antilock brakes (and no collision).

So haven't tried it in the 2 series, but in the new model X1 is absolutely applies the brakes, and does so hard enough to kick off antilock. I think the "light braking" in the documentation is just covering themselves legally. If the car in front of you completely stops and you're going highway speeds, I don't think it would stop soon enough.

I haven't had the system come on with the city braking function, but soon after picking up the car I was driving at highway speed maintaining a generous, multiple car length spacing with the car in front of me. Keep in mind I was actually paying attention when the car ahead slammed on brakes. The system's aural alarm went off, which subsequently scared the shit out of me because I had never heard it go off (I had seen visual alert before), and it was loud! The system was in the default middle setting and alerted before I recognized the increased rate of closure. And, it definitely pre-loaded the brakes as advertised.

I've had the brakes pre-load at highway speed when a car in front of me reacted to a cop coming on the highway by locking up their brakes. I was probably following a little close (which I rarely do). I was also distracted by the cop but the loud alarm fired, i hit the pedal and we were nearly stopped instantly. The cop ignored the whole thing and pursued his original target ahead of us.

Is it even an option in Canada? I want it (if I go for the 2018 LCI M240xi ragtop), but I see nothing in the package or individual options on the Canadian Build site to indicate that is available to Canadians. I do see that it is part of the "Driving Assistance Plus Package" on the U.S. Build site, but there's no such feature described on our site. What up wit dat?

The Driving Assistant option is listed on the BMW Canada website as being included with the Executive Package, and then it has a pic in german lol (In the U.S it is under the Driving Assistance Plus Package). The car definately has the warning with brake priming as I had it activate on me when I first purchased the car when I got within 2 seconds of the car I was following at highway speed (was getting ready to pass and had to speed up to merge into traffic). It also has a setting of how far back it warns you. What I am trying to determine is if this car will actually stop for you or not, and if so at what speeds. The manual is very vague with regards to this function, therefore I thought I would ask the community for their input. By the way I did ask the SA, but not sure if I trust his answer. I hope this clarifies my question.

P.S. How do you quote person above in android app? thx

Didn't know that thanks. I've seen "Driver Assistance" as a feature of the Executive Pkge, but the details only show it to have "lane departure warning".

I also had the warning sound. It gets your attention, that's for sure. Were you close enough to the car in front of you to notice any autonomous braking?

No, but they were definitely pre-loaded as the car slowed quickly.

Had it happen twice today.
First time on 40kmh or so, while changing lanes came close behind another car, 4 loud beeps and red car symbol in dash, no self braking.
Second time approaching stationary car in a turn that started moving, I approached at reasonable speed and never touched brakes.
Same beeps, red dash, and also a pretty solid self braking braking, hard enough for car to slide on some gravel on the road.
So it sure will brake, and hard. Probably a function of relative speeds and/or speed of approach between the 2 cars.
I had the "Collision Warning" as it is called on "Early", there are also "Medium" and "Late" settings.

^^^Thank you for posting! Not that I want to test this function, but it is nice to know it is there, just in case.

What he said - the Canadian site and brochures talk about lane departure warning only. No mention of active/auto-braking. Anyone know for sure if this is actually on a Canadian build model (BMW cheaps out on Canadian models on things such as tire pressure monitoring).

I broke down and called BMW Canada. They informed me my specific vehicle does indeed have autonomous braking up to approximately 40 kph for both pedestrians and vehicles. It also primes the brakes and chimes a warning "gong" informing of an immanent collision. They warned me it may not fully brake depending on speed though. They also pointed out there is an instructional video in the electronic owners manual included with the vehicle, who knew?? I guess that answers my question

Which package or option did you pick that gave you the feature?

The video/owners manual is vague, hence my confusion. My car (2017 M240i xDrive convertible) has both premium and executive packages (CDN spec) with 8 speed ZF auto trans. Just curious, can you even get this feature with a manual trans? Maybe that is why it doesn't seem to show up on certain builds?

In the US, it can be added to a manual.. I was able to build one with the manual.

Actual breaking only happened twice to me. Both times false alarms. The car misjudged. It was a little jarring
