This should have been done for the M3-M4... I would LOVE to see how people here want their M3's engine to be!

No torque to speak of. However, what kind of miracle can be done by adding VANOS and DISA to a high revving 4 pot is to be seen. The same engine with a different manifold has a very different torque curve.

  2. The M2 has to be competitive with the CLA AMG 45 and the RS3, not neccesarily match them, but at least be in the ball park

For these reasons, I don't think that 300 HP will do regardless of weight, I think they have to be targeting the 340-350 range.

Speaking of the CLA AMG 45, does that car really have the highest specific output of any production car ever?
The current champ is the Porsche 911 GT2 RS pushing 620 HP from 3600 CC which puts it at 172.2 HP per liter. If the speculation about the Merc having 360 HP from a 2.0 I4 is true, that would put it at 180 HP per liter !!
Is that for real? How insane is that
I'm pretty sure those numbers for the CLA45 are confirmed.

Amazing !!! Is is confirmed to have 350Hp or 360Hp? I have heard both numbers. Remains to be seen how the A Class AMG45 / CLA AMG45 will drive and feel and whether it is civilized enough to be daily driven

It may turn out to be the case, but for two generations, M spent money on an inline six engine designed specifically for the M3 that not just matched but exceeded the performance and feel of the series V8s available at the same time. And, if things play out the way that pretty much everyone today believes they will, they are set to do this yet again with the F8x.

So, it does not seem implausible to me that we could see the M2 similarly get an I4 that exceeds the series I6 (which by then will be the B68) in every category that matters. It might not be in the cards, but I am certainly not going to be surprised if it indeed comes to pass.

I think it will be closer to 350hp for the US. Either way, it has set the record for specific power output for a regular production car in the US.

It's definitely meant to be driven daily just like any other hot hatch. Factory garage queens don't sell well enough to make a business case in this day and age. If the car can't be used for a trip to the corner, it isn't getting past the suits counting up the beans.

As much as I love our F30 328i, the motor's sound is so uninspiring. It sounds like a (quieter) diesel at idle and never really gets me excited like my N55 or N54 do. If they can get turbo lag to at least N54 levels (the N20 has noticeably more lag down low) and get it to sound like a proper BMW Motorsport motor then I would be fine with an inline four but as of today I would really prefer a straight six and wouldn't mind dealing with the weight penalty.

If this thread were about predicting the future rather than voting on our personal preference, I would say the I4 is the much more likely motor.

When was the last time you drove any AMG that wasn't civilized enough to be daily driven? I've driven pretty much all of their current range except the facelifted 4Matic E63 and the C63 Black Series and in the grand scheme of things, they're closer to comfy couches than race cars. I don't mean that as a criticism, I absolutely love AMGs specifically because they're such great daily cars that will also rip your head off when you put your foot down.

By the way, if we're talking specific power output the Koenigsegg Agera is the highest production car I can think of. The regular Agera makes 192hp/liter (960hp from a 5 liter twin turbo motor) on pump gas. It also makes 1030hp on 98 octane and 1140 on E85 but obviously that's a different story.

I feel like the M2 doesn't need to have a lot of power. As long as it handles incredibly well, revs high, is stupid fun to drive, and has an m3 differential and other m3 suspension components. Keep the weight down and maybe the lack of power won't matter. By comparison the Scion FRS, I heard, is a little under powered and I feel like thats the Japanese 2 series. I feel like an n55 variant isn't vary unique for an M2.

I believe 350 HP with an AMG "tuned" 4matic set-up. I bet the handling will be superb since it seems that AMG is focusing more on performance in the curves rather than just in a straight line lately.

N55

There's no way they will have a M235i with an N55, and an M2 with two cylinders less. And yes, I would only consider the I6.

Maybe, but I would be more impressed if it were normally aspirated. Getting high specific output through forced induction is not that hard. At the simplest level, all you need to do is to increase the boost.

I think the NA production car engine with the highest specific output right now is the V8 in the Ferrari Italia 458, which puts out 125 bhp/liter. Of course that still pales in comparison to what a current F1 engine puts out.

I would still never consider the CLA (AMG tuned or not) though due to the fact that it's based on a FWD/AWD platform. Plus I don't think it looks that great anyway.
