CA DMV Question

Its almost time to go back home to CALI. Bought the M235i (CA specs) last January but was not delivered here in Bahrain until July. Planning on shipping the car end of February 2015 and hope for May 2015 VPC pick up in San Diego. When I register the car in CA, will it be treated as an out of state used car? I called DMV in Sacramento twice and got two different answers. One said it would be treated as an out of state brand new car even though it is a 2014 model and was registered and used in Bahrain, one said bring at least $500 and it would be treated as an out of state used car. Thanks for your feedback.

Great car, BTW.

I assume you either bought a US spec car or know what you have to do to bring it into compliance so CBP will clear it into California.

Is your question related to new or used really a concern about the duty import you will be paying?

Thanks for the info. I'm not worried much about clearing the car through CBP because I will be shipping it under my military orders (Free shipping too ) I'm just wondering how much will DMV charge me when I register the car and get the CA pink Slip(title).

You should contact the 'DMV'. Do they provide an exemption for your status?

I already talked to two DMV reps in Sacramento and got two different answers. The online estimator computes two different things too. If I include taxes paid in other states, it is lesser. I will try calling again.

Finally got the car registered and since it's over one year old when I took delivery from VPC in San Diego, I only paid $351 for registration.
