Hmmm....several points.
A) it sounds like you and your friends are deep in the M breed. Though you may want that raw, visceral driving car, most BMW drivers don't. Not saying York wrong, just that you're in the minority.
B) if you want to drag out a 135i as a comparison, that's fine. But the 1 series M is another breed of cat. No compromise, track toy. Compare it to the m2 when it drops but not the M235i.
C) I feel that the dual personality of the M235i is one of its best features. Totally docile as a daily driver in comfort mode. Tip the shifter and drop into sport plus and it's damn near as fast around a track as a 1M. Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde. I'm not punishing passengers during the week and can chase corvettes through the canyons on weekends.

I think if you drive a 228i, you get a traditional, spirited BMW experience...similar to a 3/4 series but more tossable due to the smaller size.

The M235i adds a significant chunk of power, better brakes & suspension. It's not the harsh, non-compromising (or high price) of an M, but it is a little beast in its own right. It's got some of piss of a true M car, but is far easier for most people to live with. I think that's why it's getting such accolades. It's in that sweet spot between the recent boats of BMW...and the wicked monsters coming out of the M division.

It's a nice guy alright. But when it takes its shirt off the girls forget the nice part.
