CLA 250, so same like car than M235, but still so opposite. No manual transmission, Fwd(need huge space front of the car-->huge front overhang so desing is not so natural), and four cylinder engine. Hope we get option mechanical LSD on M235 models, don´t know why BMw deleted it on option list, e36 and e34 has last cars to get optional Lsd.

The merc exteriour is much improved.
Interiour not so, the screen is a joke, and FW drive... But it looks premium, and agressive. The thing is though, the 2 will destroy it on the road and track, as always! And the exteriour of the 2 is more sporty, but toned down a little compared to the merc. The interiour of the 2 is much more... Proffesional than the merc, it looks like they tried to hard, or just focused on the outside of this car. To sum it up: The merc has wolf clothing, but is really a sheep (FW) The 2 has wolf clothing, and behaves like a true wolf!

Merc front looks awsome while bmw back looks way better than the merc. Inside i can already imagine the merc to be nicer. But cant buy the merc mainly because of its low fat ass back! A45 merc amg still the best looker out there, a pity about the price :/

agreed. i'm just not seeing how these cars compete AT ALL. Even if it was a M235i GC versus as A45 AMG. Looks aside, the BMW platform is just more expensive (RWD,longitudinal).

The other major reason that these cars don't compete is what their goal is (at least here in the US):
1) CLA was designed to bring younger buyers into the mercedes brand - entry level pricing is important and sloughing off the "old, stodgy" reputation of mercedes customers is impt 2) The 2er was designed to provide compact, "purist" sports coupe in the original spirit of the 2002 or the e30. BMW will use the 320i or the X1 to get younger buyers cheaply into the brand. I do not anticipate the 2er being "affordable" at all.

Why are we comparing the M235i to the CLA 45 AMG? Shouldn't it be compared to the regular CLA? I think a comparison of the M2 (when it is released) should be compared to the CLA 45 AMG.

the M2 when released will be the first new BMW i will buy outright. i missed on the 1M and wasnt that much of a fan on the styling, but this just screams raw and aggression. i expect fully the 2m to be the next great M car for the track enthusiast. good job BMW answer my prayers. Oh and im 100% going to be euro delivering it and hopefully get approval for an indiv. gotta love the perks of working for the brand!

Was never a fan of the CLA, although I need to see it in real life. Too bubbly, with a squashed rear end. IMO, the 2er blows it out of the water.
Cannot wait to see what the M2 looks like. Quote:

Mercedes looks more aerodynamic. The hood and windshield is almost one continuous line and there are no disruptive elements for the air flow in the rear either. It must have a huge advantage especially at high speeds in the form of very low drag.

How much $$ you want to bet the 228i will start at a higher base price than the 320i and the X1 (and prob have a more expensive option pkg) ??

320i starts at $32.5k Current 128i coupe starts at $31.2k My opinion is that the 2er isn't going to be a giant leap in terms of price compared to the 1er. I don't think the gap is so huge that the 2er is all of a sudden not an entry level BMW in the US.

Merc has too many doors, those Nissan style bugeye lights, and black wheels. Enough with the black wheels already! The 2 looks like a 3 fresh out of a trash compactor. Decisions, decisions...

Ignoring the drivetrains of these upcoming smaller sedans and focusing only on looks, I much prefer the A3/S3 to the CLA. Obviously it is still to be determined what a 2er Gran Coupe will look like. On my way into work this morning, I was driving next to an E46 sedan with the ZHP package and man, that car still looks good on the road today. I think if a 2er Gran Coupe could retain similar proportions in length and wheelbase to that E46 sedan, it has the potential to be the small 4-door that many BMW fans are looking and waiting for.

It's not at all surprising that the choice between the two is divisive. The 2er uses a classic wedge design, with a rakish front and strong rear visual balance. The CLA follows in the CLS's footsteps, applying the teardrop design where lines at the rear return to a single visual point of focus.
The hood-to-windscreen angle on the 2er is more acute as well. The CLA has a strong arch-like design cue going on. Some people love it; others hate it. Honestly, I appreciate both designs. The Merc reminds me of an old Delahaye. Anyone who tells you that this is an "ugly" design is just expressing their opinion. From a design perspective, it's a beautiful piece of work. Being 100% honest, it's not my preference though. I prefer the wedge design of the 2er. It's visually simpler, but the rakish lines give a more aggressive appearance. They're both fantastic designs, IMO. The 2er could be likened to the shape of a fighter jet, while the CLA is more like an elegant dolphin. In the attachment, I've drawn on what I think are the most visually prevalent design lines (ignoring cutlines).

i'd be happy with either one and I am no way a fan of MB, I actually dislike most of their cars there's non currently that I would own can't imagine how they got 360hp out of a 2.0 for the CLA 45 AMG! with 34mpg the above pictures are pretty interesting
