A bicycle...seriously!
Before I bought the '16 228i, I was commuting to work on a bicycle. The wife still had her Taurus, so we had a car if needed, but I owned a nice Specialized. |

The 228i is my first BMW and is by far the best of the lot, which has included:
1990 Volvo 740 Wagon (ubiquitous first car for New England kids in the '90s) 1995 VW Cabrio (cute, gutless, totaled when I was 18) 1998 Volvo S70 (a sensible shoe) 1999.5 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro (learned to drive stick on it - still miss it) 2004 Saab 9-3 (another sensible shoe, but fun to drive - kept for 9 years) Looking to add a classic BMW to my stable in the next year or two, probably an E24 or E28. |

2004 MG TF 135 80th Anniversary Edition
2011 Citroën Ds3 2011 BMW 120i Coupe 2014 BMW M235i Coupe If I had all the money in the world right now, I'd sell my M235i, get an M2 and an MG TF for those sunny weekends that need a convertible to enjoy It should be very obvious from the list though, that the M235i is easily the best car I've ever owned (and driven as well, I might add).

Thanks for asking.
In order to answer your question properly, I think it is best if I explain why I bought it and why I traded it in for a BMW. I was really enjoying my MG TF at the time. It was a fun, mid-engined, RWD, sporty little corner monster. Not the best in terms of interior finishing and quality, but oh boy, it was fun to drive! Unfortunately, I had a bit of bad luck and ended up paying about $2000 in repairs due some seriously bad brake issues. I had the repairs done to restore the car to pristine condition and traded it in for the Ds3. You see, I saw the Ds3 as an opportunity to still have a car that's fun to drive, but offered a lot more in terms of comfort over the MG. The Ds3 was just as fast as the MG TF (unless you went over 100 MPH, then the MG would have an edge) and it sounded pretty neat for a simple 1.6l 120 HP NA engine. Although I enjoyed the car, it could never match the MG in terms of fun. The engine was clearly not built to be as sporty as the MG's Rover K-series engine that was also used in the Lotus Elise and the transmission was a lot more "user friendly" as well. Still, the Ds3 offered a fun and comfortable ride and I do not regret buying it. So why did I get rid of it? Well, I ended up missing the MG too much and started looking for a car that would be almost as fun to drive as the MG, but still offered the comforts the Ds3. I ended up buying the BMW. It was almost as fun to drive as the MG and at the same time was nearly full-option. Also, the Citroen community and brand are pretty boring in comparison to the Rover/MG and BMW community. So to summarize, the Ds3 is a great little car, but it's a little tame. I can't speak for the Ds3 racing of course. That's a different animal (I've driven a Peugot 206 GTi that has the same engine as the Ds3 racing and it was pretty nice). If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask!

Great reply. Thanks.
My father had a Peugot (403?) way back in the day. Gorgeous car and lots of fun to drive. But the repairs proved too much. I can see why you liked the MG! |

You're very welcome!

Don't get me started. I can talk about that car for ages. I mean if you take a good look at the car you'll notice that the raw performance figures are nothing special, the overall build quality is rather so-so and the Rover K-series engines are infamous for premature head gasket failures. But when you're on the road with that little British git it offers so much fun. It loves to rev, it's suspension is very stiff and it will eat any corner for breakfast. You're very close to road and with a roaring engine behind you it really gives you the feeling as if you're driving a fast nimble sportscar. Throw a Milltek exhaust on it and it sounds even better. It's a shame that Rover/MG is dead (Yeah, I know that the Chinese are still producing MGs, but IMHO it's like slapping a BMW logo on a car produced by Lada, ultimate driving machine my bum!).
