Not a problem with my 8-speed automatic.

Bought a 2004 RX-8 new and kept it for almost 10 years. 6-speed manual sport model.

So, you well know what happens if you try to lug that little 1.3 liter Wankel. Answer: nothing. I mean, nothing! It won't move! Ha!

The torqueless wonder.
I haven't been caught with my pants down often in the RX-8, but when it happens, the pants are all the way down, wrapped around the ankles.

I've lugged the crap out of my Si various times over the years and she still purrs. It's like saying not to rest your hand on the shifter or depress the button before putting on the ebrake.

But in all fairness, I really enjoyed my RX-8. To me, it was more like the early era of little sport cars with small, 4-cylinder engines - you really had to keep the RPM's up if you wanted any performance. So, rowing the gears and keeping that little Wankel in its best performance band really was fun.

By contrast, my M235i is remarkably easy to go quick, even at low RPM's.

I had an 04 rx8 - never have I had a car I needed to carry more than a qaurt of oil around at all times before it 😞

The red and black interior was sweet though

EngineeringExplained also has a few videos on the Wankel explaining why it's cycle is so inefficient and burns oil. It's basically working as designed .

My RX-8 used about one quart of oil between oil changes (3000k miles) for perhaps the first 10k miles. After that, the oil consumption went way down. Of course, the engine still used oil, but that is the way it was designed. Some owners freaked out about the oil consumption, but there really wasn't anything wrong with the engine. Kind of like owning a 2-stroke engine - they use oil.

There is one thing though, that bothered me about the Wankel and that was its occasional tendency to almost flood. Mine royally flooded once and it was a b**ch to "un-flood." After that, I had new coils, spark plugs and battery replaced. This improved the situation, but it still acted like it was getting close to flooding a few times, even after that.

I have been fortunate to never have flooded the car, but I was pretty paranoid about it. It's a pain to have to worry about it every time you want to move the car in the driveway.

I like the way that 6,000-9,000 rpm on the tach bracks 12 o'clock - the working range on the track. Spend a lot of time over 8,500, though, and you're looking at some scary oil temps.

Does making quick turns in 3rd gear and not 2nd considering lugging the engine? I realized rpm will be at 2000 when making turns in 3rd gear.

The point he makes is about putting a heavy load on the engine at low RPM. As long as you aren't flooring it coming out of the turn, it's not lugging.

It's hard to lug this engine with the peak torque starting at 1250 RPM.But,right, don't use WOT (flooring it) at low RPM's.

I had a rx8 back in the day. Blew up on prom night which really sucked. I had a coolant leak and didn't notice my temp gauge going up from the long night. All in all a bad night where I didn't get prom sex, blew my only mode of transportation, and was out of 6k of my own money. Fun car though.

True.

The shift indicator (under the tach) would have you in 4th gear before 30 mph. Though I can't imagine anyone following the indicator as soon as it shows a new gear. You're never going to get over 2000 rpm. The owner's manual shows a "shift down" symbol that may pop up, but in all the time I've owned mine, I've never seen it suggest a downshift.

So yes, the low end torque aids efficiency.

Sounds like a scene from the movie, "American Graffiti."
