They really need to be aware of this issue though, there are way too many instances online for this not to be a common problem that they just take care of no questions asked. |

The problem, as I have stated on previous threads, is the lack of a wire spring behind the retention legs. The plastic legs work fine at normal temperatures. Brake heat plus high ambient temperatures can cause plastic creep which reduce retention force of the legs. A C-shaped retention spring would fix the issue and is a common design feature on Ford and Toyota caps.

I've had many replacements from the dealer and they simply keep replacing them. I'm not sure if the dealer actually notifies BMW under the warranty or simply eats the cost.
Once in a while I'm lucky to catch one or more of the caps starting to loosen up so I pop them out and pull on all the little tabs to give it a bit more resistance. That usually extends the life by a few months. |

Bottomline: my SA was unwilling to support this as a warranty claim despite my claim that it is a defective part (which is covered by our warranty). To his credit, he did agree to give me one for free, as a one time good deal. It felt like charity, and I almost walked away w/o it. But the Service Manager agreed to elevate my claim and said he would do more research on the "issue." I recommend anyone that loses one to address it with their dealer. This won't become a TSP unless we make BMW aware of the defect. |

Mine fell off either early this morning or late last night. Emailed my SA so we'll see how it goes.

Lost two more of these things, curbs and steep inclines are popping them off. Sometimes I find them, sometimes I don't.
Dealer says the next time they are going to need to keep the car to find out what the issue is. I am down to leave it because it is stupid that I need to buy these little caps because they keep falling off. |

^This.
BMW isn't going to do anything about this. Luckily the problem is easily solved by cleaning the rim and cap with rubbing alcohol and applying a few dabs of an appropriate sealant/glue/silicone. We're talking 30 minutes or less of work for peace of mind. |

Wow, really for free?? Ironically enough I see this post a few days back and today I notice my left front is missing.
Before I buy a replacement I'd like to know if it's covered under maintenance or warranty. Cheers.

It is covered due to this being a design flaw. If they try to give you any crap, point them to the internet, this is an obvious issue with these particular wheels.

i dont think the dealer is gonna care if people on the internet are bitching. if the dealer is cool they will probably replace it for free but if the dont want to there is nothing you can do about it. i dont think it is technically covered by warranty.

There is plenty you can do about it, it is as simple as taking your car in and documenting every occurrence. |
