Downshift sounds.
I did test drive a Cayman and found the size a little small but the downshift exhaust sound intoxicating. Slowing the car down was just as much fun as sleeping up to hear the engine when you downshift.
Now obviously a turbo I6 in under the front hood can't match a naturally aspirated 6 right behind your ear, but I'm wondering if any of you guys have opinions on the M235i/M240i downshift sound when in sport+ mode. In fact, if any of you happen to have the M performance exhaust and could record a few downshifts in sport + that would be really, really awesome. |

I have the MPE and it's pretty tame as I still have a stock DP. It crackles and gargles a lot on decels. It sounds pretty aggressive when heel/toe downshifting and I'd imagine with a DP installed it'll only get better. Lots of vids kicking around on youtute with different configurations (stock dp, catted dp, catless dp, dp + resonator delete etc. lots of different tones and sounds with each config.) with the MPE, check em out!

The thing I liked about the cayman actually was that the exhaust wasn't that aggressive to bystanders but inside the car is sounded brilliant. I'm actually not a huge fan of the backfiring and cackling because I think it's honestly just obnoxious. The burbling sounds cool though. The other thing is that these videos almost always show hard acceleration which I think already sounds good enough with stock exhaust. What I'm really looking for is that beautiful downshift-to-high-revs blip sound. Might just not get that on the M240i. |

I'd love Ferrari sounds from my car too, but it's just not a Ferrari lol. It sounds pretty exotic for what it is, though. This is a lower compression I6 turbo engine, and your just not going to get NA flat 6 high compression sounds out of it. If that's what you're after then get the Caymen It's just not a very practical car IMO and should be someones second vehicle. And I'm sure maintenance and repairs will get costly in comparison with a 2 series BMW.
I'm sure you'll get the desired sounds you want with a resonator delete or an aftermarket downpipe. Gotta remember, they built these cars to be both "quiet" on the inside and still "loud" enough on the outside to fancy the enthusiasts. Only way to get more cabin noise from the engine/exhaust would be to switch them to less restrictive parts like an aftermarket intake/exhaust, which never hurts anyways

I agree. Unfortunately the Cayman spoiled me. However, I'm 22, it's not a practical car...
I'm almost considering now just getting a beater as a daily and a cayman as a second car. |

I have the MPE and love to drive with the windows open when it's comfortable just so I can hear the exhaust. It's a decent note and sounds like a performance car with the popping on deceleration, but you're not going to mistake it for a Porsche.

You won't hear the stock exhaust much with the windows up. With windows down you'll hear it. A video will be hard to capture the inside sound either way. Probably why you don't see many of them.
With downpipe and MPE you can hear it pretty well with the windows up though. This is a good vid of the setup and what I run.

I completely agree with the posters above who talked about "who cares about what the exhaust sounds like on the outside" and "with the windows up it's hard to hear the exhaust at all." These cars have so much sound deadening and insulation they are like bank vaults. That's why I'm not wasting any money on exhaust systems or parts. Doing so would just annoy and scare people and you'd never hear it yourself. If you drive the car with the windows up and the radio and a/c off that's about the best you'll get to hear the exhaust. And it's really not that bad stock.
