228i Engine Sound

I've got a 228i on order and have not seen any significant review of the 228i's engine sound or exhaust note. Has anyone had a chance to drive one and can comment on how it sounds? I've read before that the n20 sounds like a diesel engine at idle in other cars, but I also heard in a youtube test drive review that BMW had worked to change the engine sound for the 228i. Does anyone have information on this?

Thanks!

I've had a listen and test drive of the 428i, and while it's definitely an I4 in there, it doesn't sound all that bad under load. When I was done with the test drive, I hopped out and had the SA rev it for me while I stood out back. Doesn't sound awe inspiring, but again, not *so* bad. At idle I could barely hear it.

I'll say it sounds tons better than my 2012 Focus I4 both inside and out.

I test drove a 228. It sounds much more aggressive than a 328 or 428. The car I drove was baseline too. My SA was surprised as well.

Is the sound artificially piped into the 228?

I have 2014 X1 with the N20...I find it to be a fantastic 4 cylinder. Dare I say the best 4 I have ever driven. I also love the sound it makes as it moves through the gears (it is a bit clattery when cold @ idle though). If the 228i sounds even better than mine that is just gravy IMHO! Granted I'm looking at the M235i and passing my X1 over to the wifey. I test drove the M235i and was sold. When factoring in a budget of <$40k don't be scared away from the 228i MSport!

Well that's fantastic to hear. I'd be fine with what the 428i would give me for sound, so anything better is gravy! I'm just waiting on my dealership to finish prepping their demo car so I can test drive for my own. *Should* be tomorrow, but they've really been dragging ass getting the thing ready.

Great to hear some good opinions on it, thanks for the help!

Any chance anyone has driven or is going to test drive a 228i with a 6MT? I'm also very anxious to hear a review of how it feels power wise with the manual, given the disappointing numbers in the spec sheet.

I finally got to test drive the 228i, and I can verify that the engine does sound significantly better than the 428i I drove. Both out back and inside the cabin.

My wife has a 2013 328i. I test drove the 228i a couple of weekends ago and was really pleasantly surprised by the engine sound. It sounded very different from the 328i, which I though sounded very weak, as if it was struggling (when clearly it wasn't, the 328i drives awesome). The 228i sounded a lot better, and it made my order decision a lot easier

Having said that, I test drove an M235i right after and it sounded like a beast. I'm still very happy with my decision to go with the 228i though, can't wait to get it

I picked up my manual 228 msport on Monday and have been driving steady now. Engine noise...anything in ecopro or comfort not great under normal driving . sport or sport + noticeable change much better throttle response and accompany engine sound as you rev it. Does it have the throatty burl of m235...no...but it suffices for me. I like the torque feel to tell truth...besides if I have radio cranked engine sound is subdued.

I have one and it sounds much more aggressive than I would have thought. I don't know if they are pumping in more sound or if it's a better exhaust system now. Either way I'm happy!

There's a video on YouTube from that guy from BMW San Francisco and he drives a base model 228. At the beginning he said the engine has been tweaked to have a better sound and from what I could tell from the video he was correct. It had a nice deep pleasant sound to it, especially for a 4 cyl.

And wow! Your white with the black kidneys is beautiful!
