So long story short, about 8 months ago I purchased an auction 2016 228XI. When I purchased it, I was aware that it had some previous hail damage and body work, but was under the impression that my warranty would still cover anything not affected by this.

Yesterday, out of the blue, I get the message on idrive:
*Left rear turn signal malfunction
*Left reverse light malfunction
*Two stage brake light malfunction

Upon taking the vehicle in to BMW and having it taken apart, I am informed by my service advisor that because the car had previously been resprayed, and there was some bondo visible on the back side of the light that this would not be covered. At this point, they are saying that both the wire, and the entire lighting assembly need to be replaced.

I feel that this is unreasonable because there is no evidence that any go this body work caused the light to fail, and furthermore, it concerns me that they will try to deny further work for these reasons.

So at this point, my 3 options are:

1.Try taking the car to another dealership
2. Open an appeal with BMW Warranty
3. Suck it up and pay the money out of pocket(not sure what the total for this repair will be)

What do you guys think?
I never assume anything when purchasing a used car especially if it had previous damage. Sorry for your trouble but I always get a car fax and detailed report on any damage that may have occurred on used cars I have purchased and have never had any issues. The BMW dealer is correct in not assuming responsibility for this issue.

For what it's worth since it seems you pretty much got the info you need but, the problem you're experiencing is a know issue. I had the same problem with very similar error codes you had. BMW covered the repair under warranty which was a burnt up ground cable on one side causing a short. They claim the other side was going to short soon as well so they replaced both tail light wiring harnesses with a retrofit kit. No problems since. There's a forum thread around here somewhere where a bunch of us had the same problem.

I have a pretty serious upgraded sound system installed in my car with about 10 feet of 1/0 gauge wire running up to my amps and they still covered it so that was fortunate.

If it were me, I'd take the info provided from others with a similar issue that were fixed under warranty to another BMW dealership and talk to the Svc mgr.
I'd elaborate that when this issue occurred you went online to see if others may have had a similar issue....blah blah blah. Give him the SIB # and see what shakes out. Who knows.

Since this issue was covered under warranty w/ others a different dealership may do the work (as warranty) and charge it to BMW w/o question. Worst case, they deny it also.

If denied, you can go the DIY route or find a good local mechanic to do the replacement.

Too bad you are not close to Delaware. I use a garage that only services Eureopean vehicles and he is better than the dealership and cheaper. I may call him and ask for his advice on this if you don't mind.

My 2003 E46 had a similar issue where the ground wire was not thick enough. Thanks to alert from forum members, I was able to beef up the ground wire and prevent a short. Interestingly enough, about 6-7 years later, I get a recall notice from BMWNA about this same issue with the ground wire problem. Go figure...

Well good news, after a 3rd visit yesterday to the original dealership for a second look, a second service advisor(who I have worked with before) called a few hours later to inform me that the dealer would be covering the entire repair under warranty. Picked the car up this morning and everything seems fine. Per the repair ticket

Performed SIB 630517
-right bulb socket
-left bulb socket
-repair cable-tail lights
-cable connector
-shrinking hose

You guys were right, that original assembly was fine. Hope this post will help other who are having this same issue go in the right direction

Thanks again!!

Nice, congrats on the good result. FWIW I have found that A LOT of what's covered and what's not is very much a grey area and the service folks can help you out if they want. Helps to build and maintain good relationships. I once had a rear diff and transfer case go and they offered to replace for free even though my warranty had ended 7K miles ago. It was covered by CPO but they couldn't tell that at the time since the computer system was down. That was a $8K job they would do for good will.

Unsolicited advice - leave a case of beer or something in the trunk of the loaner when you return it as a thank you to the SA.

Wow, they were going to charge over $800 unnecessarily for something that could be repaired for under 50 bucks. We don't call them "stealership" for nothing.. #InformationIsPower

So I guess dealers should now be providing free labor? Good luck on that one.

To be perfectly fair to all involved, a lot of car stuff you really have to get into it before getting a true cost. So an honest mechanic could tell you $100 and it turns out to be $1000, or he could tell you $1000 then after doing some exploratory surgery turns out to be a $100 fix.

What he said is a true statement though(usually). Sometimes, you have to keep it real.

It’s too bad that you can’t just say that a dealer is trying to screw you any more. People have to use real profanity these days. It’s not true anyway. Actually, how many dealers have you been to? That’s a real generalization.

They do get paid less by BMW for a warranty claim than if they can find a way to charge you, so some will take advantage. I had my Z4 if for correcting a noisy cooling fan on warranty (or was it the electric water pump - it's been a while and a couple cars ago) and they called back telling me that before they could remove the shrouds to access the area, that with the previous crash damage it would be on my ticket to cover the repairs rather than on warranty. I told them that if there is crash damage, then it happened under their care before they delivered the car, and did not disclose it upon sale. Funny that they had no problem covering it under warranty.

Profanity? Are we on Sesame Street? I know you're trying desperately to get into Heaven (good luck on that one ) ) and what I typed on a keyboard hurt your virgin eyes but I was making a point with sarcasm, like adults do.. You must me 5 years old, so it went over your head.. And also, if you have !NOTHING! constructive to add but criticism and conjecture, take the thumb out of your ass and get off the forum!! It's a shame there appear to be no moderators on this forum to kick the useless people off! #WasteOfBandwidth
