DINANTRONICS Sport Performance Tuner

Hi all, a question from the tuning newbie. I'd like to put a tune to increase performance on my 228i, and I am well aware of Dinan. Now, it offers Stage 1 Performance tuner, priced at over $1500 before installation - kind of costly. I am aware of the warranty and Dinan's reputation, etc.

There is also what seems to be a cheaper version of a Dinan tune: DINANTRONICS Sport Performance Tuner, for about 1/5 of the price. It seems to offer a decent HP and torque boost, but the caveat is that it seems it doesn't meet emission standards in California.

Is it possible (or worth the trouble) to get the DINANTRONICS Sport Performance Tuner in CA and would it screw up my smog check when it's due?

Does this tune even compare with the Stage 1 tuner? Any advice appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about the smog check for the sport tuner. You could pull it off in 5 minutes if the shop even noticed it. Also your first smog check is 6 years after the car is bought new. Just last month I smogged my old 330 with a bunch of Dinan mods and they don't even bother to sniff the tailpipe any more in CA. Basically no CEL or emission faults and you are good to go.

Can't believe how crazy lax Cali is now, but in PA they do it annually, sticking a device into the tailpipe attached to a computer (state regulated computer) that spits out a slip of paper with all the measurements, along with a PASS or FAIL, of which if you fail, you have to run again after repairs, being charged every single time they run the test ($35 I believe).

Thanks for the assist!

ExZHP : Please check for, then search, an appropriate subforum for this kind of specialized info. The subforum for drivetrain mods for the 228i's N20 engine is here.

Particularly for the N20, which is tuned far less often than the 235/240, this post belongs in that subforum.

Thank you.

You should also search in the 3 series forum. I have an N20 that has Dinan tune on it in my wagon. Still small % of cars tuned but there are a lot more 3-series out there than 2-series.

Thanks. I guess I was specifically interested about the California implications of the Dinantronics Sport tune, of which there is not that much reference elsewhere other that "you can remove it before taking the car to the dealer".
Also, is it worth spending $1500 plus installation on the proper stage 1 in comparison? I'll try my luck on other sites.

Unless you are throwing a code, they wont care for crap.

I just smogged my Z3, which has a tune, headers, relocated emissions equipment, etc.

Didn't say a thing.

If visually there is blatantly something out of place, they might say something. But the biggest visual cues on my car were the intake (which is dinan and has the carb sticker to go with it), and the headers/exhaust midsection. Because the aftermarket headers do not contain cats, I had to stick a universal cat in the mid section of the exhaust.

But I have seen cars get turned away for having just an intake, so it depends on the place etc.

They've had it in for that every since it was released, which was well more than a year ago. I doubt it's gonna receive it, especially now that Dinan's been bought out and is moving to 'bama.

Yeah, I have a feeling their prices and overall offerings might drop a bit. I hope I am wrong, but that was a big thing for having CARB certification here.

But for the OP, if you are really that worried, just take it off. But you wont need to smog the oldest M235i until 2020, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I am interested in this cheaper option from Dinan, but concerned that they don't provide warranty coverage for the car in case something happens. I wonder if this really is a cause for concern or not.

Well, I don't get this at all. All the information I've ever seen indicates that in Pennsylvania, tailpipe sniff tests for cars are only applicable to model year 1995 and older, and that's only in the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia regions. The only tests applicable for newer cars are OBD I/M and gas cap test.

Does anyone know what kind of impact Dinan has on gas mileage. I know we didn't buy these cars for their fuel efficiency, but I don't want to go from spending $150 a month on gas to $300 a month...

MPG does not change as long as your driving habits don't

It will. By about 15%.

I had a 2014 228i 6mt that I never installed the Dinantronics sport tuner. Averaged 27.5 mpg over 24,304 miles of ownership.

My current 216 228i 6mt I have averaged 23.8 over (a smaller sample) of 3065 miles. I installed the Dinantronics device upon purchase and left it set at the default +3psi.

Same daily route. No question the first couple of tanks I really had some extra fun with the worst tank being 20.45 but it's really been the same old daily grind since before the holidays.

Same user name on Fuelly in case you want to verify my data. The city/hwy ratio is not reliable. I used to guesstimate the % but have never bothered for about the last two years. I have a 15 mile commute (80% of these cars use) and it is 12 hwy miles at 80mph and 3 city miles.
