best piggyback chip for m235?

hi to all,
i recently bought a 2015 m235, i absolutely LOVE it, the car fits me like a glove.
i'm thinking about tuning to get more power when in sport/+ mode.

i saw there are at least 3-4 well known options here:
racehip GTS, burger tuning, dinans sport and the fourth i can't remember.

key aspects:
1. reliability issues with the engine, oil consumption etc', this is my first time tuning but from what i've read i'm not really concerned + the car is not under warranty anymore.
2. power
3. easy install

would really like to hear from guys (and girls) that installed and what do they think about their tune.

I have had the BMS Stage 1 tune on my car now for 20,000 miles and I haven't had any oil issues. I'm at 69K+ miles currently. It really woke the car up and I have the N20 in my 228i. The only issue I have had is with the plastic charge pipes and making too much boost for them. I got a CEL and cleared it. Only happened once and hasn't come back. It's worth the bit of extra loot more than the JB+ and it's one more sensor to connect (MAF/TMAP) and they are right next to each other.

FYI, they're not "chips" any more, but are either flash tunes (applied directly to the DME) or auxiliary control units that allow more aggressive fuel, ignition, and boost mapping. I've got the MPPK and a JB+ on my 2013 335i and it's more than adequate. If you don't have the MPPK, the JB1 would be a good choice for the cost.

The Dinan Sport and JB+ are pretty much identical except that the Dinan allows you to control the boost setting via bluetooth (to a phone or tablet) where the JB+ requires you to open the case and manually adjust a dial setting). I don't have any experience with the GTS device, but I'd recommend sticking with the more popular brands (Burger and Dinan).

thanks for the answers

ok, so burgers it is.
two questions:
1. does the tune goes into action only in sport mode or at all modes?
2. debating between the jb+ and the stage 1, price difference is not much..

thanks!

Its active in all modes once oil temperature reaches above 70C (at least the latter is true for JB4)

AFE Scorcher

Had this on my M235 and was impressed, missing from choices but should be considered. I'm using the Dinan Sport on my M240, got it used for 1/2 price, nice bump over stock.

OP, this should have originally been posted in this subforum. This is not a general interest topic.

Not only is there a wealth of info on various tunes available for the N55 there (hint: ReSEARCH! ), but at this stage in 2Addicts' maturation, you likely will have gotten more feedback on your poll.

Reported. Thank you, and welcome to the forum!

From my information, I’d advise to not use the jb4 unless you have fbo and it is being supported by a flash tune called bootmod3, also would probably suggest having fuel injectors too. But everything else piggyback wise should be fine to run

I voted for this because it is a terrible idea where I live (Canada). There is almost non-existent consumer/legal protection and therefore a performance chip virtually guarantees your car's warranty is void and you're red-flagged in all their databases. Unless you buy a new BMW from your dealer every three years and they calculate they will profit more from keeping you as opposed to charging 4-times more for outside-the-warranty repairs.

Best is Jb4 hands down but its not on your list

All three tunes you have have very similar capabilities.

Jb+ will be the best bang for your buck ... If you care about changing boost using bluetooth, Dinan would be the better option

Probably because most people prefer flash tunes vs piggy backs... A quick peek around the forums should yield detailed answers on why.

I got the jb+ for Christmas and love it. Had essentially the same product on my 2007 335 for 10 years and never had an issue with it although it was branded Split Second it was the same product. I take it off when I go to the dealer. Takes about 5 seconds to put it on but 15 minutes to figure out how to get the damn clip off the first time.

I do not have direct experience with any of these units, but I will soon be going with the Dinan Sport. I was initially going to go with Dinan Stage II unit (~$2,000) but then the flash tuners were announced. I want more power (nothing extreme) but I want to give flash tuning about a year on the market to make sure there are no undiscovered issues before going that direction. I'm also watching to see if Cobb introduces an Accessport. If they do, I'll definitely do that. For now, I'll grab a Dinan Sport.

I've contacted a handful of members on this forum to get their long term experience with the unit . All reported good results with consistent power, especially if run at the 3psi setting (Sport +) and with 93 octane. I have 93 octane readily available in my area which is great. I find the stock power to be quite good, but want just a bit more midrange punch. This should get me that power. I may also eventually go with the HJS Euro 6 300 cell downpipe too. That's good for around ~10whp/20twq with no tune across the entire powernand, improves throttle/turbo response, adds a bit more sound, and most importantly, looks damn near OEM. Those two mods may be enough to satisfy my power needs for this car. Any more power and I may risk wrecking the overall handling dynamics. I'm not interested in just having straight line power. The only reason I'm not going with the JB+ is the lack of on the fly adjustability.

Once I get the Dinan Sport and have run it a month, I'll be sure to make a detailed post about all the positives and negatives.

JB+ is a great starter tune for someone wanting to get their feet but ultimately most end up with the JB4! GL!

I got the JB4 and then the VRSF charge pipe about 5-6 weeks ago (thanks Mike!). Plugged the JB4 in (but did not connect the fuel connection) and have been running map 1 since. It's great! The only issue I have had is that it seemed to "turn off" once after I was playing with the ASD and HK amp (I thought the car was feeling "stock"; then my wife noted that she did not hear me drive into the garage). I just went through the menu again and the JB4 worked normally.

Lots of ways you can approach this really so it all comes down to YOUR needs. To be fair and stay on topic first another piggyback option that you might consider and is not in the list is the Active-8 by Active Autowerke. I had it in my car for a while and I think it's a decent option if you're only looking for a bump in power and not looking to have all the other capabilities a JB4 might offer for example. Just keep in mind all the current piggybacks on the market catered to enthusiasts looking for higher numbers when the DME flashing was only something you could do by taking the hardware out/personally going to a tuner and OBD flashing was not available for us when these cars starting coming out back in 2014. What am I trying to imply? Piggyback boxes are nowhere near as refined and polished as a proper DME flash, some units are more sophisticated than others in regards to the parameters they alter/monitor but in the end they will all be limited and some may not be as smooth running as others.

My recommendation to you:

1. Seeing as how your car is out of warranty save the money and keep an eye out for 3rd party reviews/dyno charts of the current OBD flashing options in the market. OBD flashing is a rather new option for our cars and although some companies may claim the are ahead of others and promise good looking numbers truth is they are all still in the process of fine tuning their software via feedback from those first customers who took the plunge and (hopefully) continuous in-house testing.

2. Set your car properly for a flash (or piggyback), look into upgrading key hardware such as Intercooler, Chargepipe, Catted/Catless downpipe, Intake perhaps.. all those mods will be a HUGE help once stock power is surpassed and even in stock form I'd say its a huge bonus depending on your use of your car, weather, etc.

3. Have fun modding the car the way YOU want it! Above I gave you my personal recommendations but in the end you do whatever makes you happy
