If your question is sincere and not just rhetorical, I don’t think we read the same article. It will outsell the coupe.

Not the same market niche that the RWD 2-series coupe competes directly in (which the upcoming RWD G42 fills), but sounds competitive with the 4-door Audi S3 and Mercedes A35 and has the same architecture - a much broader market for sales than the RWD enthusiast market.

The M235/M240's were some of the best values in the sporty-semi-luxury segment and nobody bought them - the 2 series was outsold 5-1 by the 3 series. It sounds like they're making a reasonable tradeoff for people who want a budget BMW. The people that care about RWD clearly aren't numerous enough or didn't put their money where their mouths are.

Further confusion for potential BMW customers trying to decipher 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series....Coupe, Gran Coupe, Sedan, etc., etc. Of course MB and Audi are just as confusing. While I am sure the 2 Series Gran Coupe will be a fine automobile and compete well with the A3 or MB CLA, I have zero interest in it.

My impression is that the typical buyer of a German vehicle chooses based upon how he or she will appear in one - not unlike a suit or a dress. I think they depend upon sales staff to steer them through the confusion and point them to their new vehicles. Lease payment considerations likely count for much more than does the issue of FWD vs. RWD.

BMW knows its customers very, very well. They know us enthusiasts well, too - and as a percentage of their customer base, how few of us there are any more.

Sad but true...lest we forget that shareholder return is the prime directive for corporate leadership.

What’s confusing is the name “M235” for the high performance version, I already have an M235.

I had a 4-door 4series for a week long loaner, and it fully solidified my hatred for this 4-door-coupe thing. To get that 2nd door, they move the b=pillar forward to about mid-thigh for me, so getting in and out felt about as graceful as I would in the i8. And I thought a 3 series really WAS a 4 door version of this (4door 2 or 4 series, really) at least close enough that I don't see the point of the hairsplitting to get a cheaper alternative to the 3. If they even halfway promoted the 2 I think they'd sell more of them, and prop up the brand image of BMW as a sporty car company at the same time.

Just like the X1 and X2, this is yet another BMW body on a Mini platform. Not buying any of them, AWD or not. Don't like crosswise-engine powertrains.
