They're crushing my car!

I got a call earlier today and my jaw about hit the floor.

It was my sales person calling with some very interesting news... When my car was shipped via rail from Montreal to Calgary it was apparently stuck in an ice storm on the east coast. The shipping company or whoever decided it was a good idea to use a de-icing solution on the vehicle. It was later determined this solution has the possibility to cause corrosion. BMW has decided to recall and destroy these affected vehicles.

My car is to be surrendered and I am to be provided a loaner (I stipulated an M4) while a MY16 is being built to replace my '15.

Since purchasing the vehicle I have invested money in stall costs for several performance parts, tinting, etc... I'm just not sure how this is all supposed to work out.

Meeting with the dealership this week, I'll keep you posted.

Just curious why would you want to have a M4 loaner? After driving one for a couple of months doubt you'd want to get back into a M235i...

Ps doubt you'd get a M4 loaner anyway lol don't think it's that feasible for BMW to have M cars as loaner cars, especially for such long period of time.

Ice storm in August?

It's a good thing they caught the issue before delivering a car that would have corrosion issues.

This occurred prior to me taking delivery of the vehicle. I've been driving it since May.

That's pretty surprising, wonder if they strip them down or crush them as is.

You would think they would pull usable parts from cars before crushing.

He already took delivery of the vehicle. The ice storm and de-icer thing was probably from this past winter.

There are lots of liabilities in reselling a car involved in an incident as the one described here. When a company is making in the $Billions, $50K hear and there doesn't even show on the radar, especially since the carriage company transporting the vehicle(s) in question are most likely reimbursing BMW for its loss.

My brother used to work for the railroad back in the 1980-90's on train derailment cleanup projects, and he said that any automobile that was riding on a rail car carrier that derailed (even if the cars loaded on the carrier were not damaged in any way) was destroyed, due to the remote possibility of someone having a vehicle-mechanical-related incident causing bodily harm or loss of life. The insurance companies repaid the manufacturer for its losses, and the cars were indeed crushed. In fact, the cleanup crew was instructed to break out all the glass in each vehicle involved as they were reloaded onto carriers.

Since our society has only grown more litigious in the years since, I certainly believe what the OP was told to be reasonable.

It's part of our "throw away" society today...

Maybe it's referring to this Transport Canada safety recall notice:
http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/...WT.mc_id=pbe5d

My 2er was in Halifax during Feb - early April timeframe so it'll be interesting if mine was affected by this.

My car was also one of the cars stuck at the port in Halifax during February. No word from the dealer yet...

That is most definitely the same recall.

According to my dealer, around 5 vehicles involved in this recall actually made it to customers, the others remain unsold or undelivered. I was told today I have 36 hours to surrender the vehicle, with a 1-2 week period with a loaner until the new vehicle arrives.

However I am on the hook for the cost of my tinted windows, and the install cost paid for my downpipe on the vehicle done by a third party.

Updates as they come!

You may be able to work something on the tint, but since the downpipe is an aftermarket item that voids warranty, I highly doubt you'll get anything out of that.

I've heard downpipes are easy to install anyways. Take your current aftermarket one off and place it to the side while you wait for your new car?

Yeah but paying for installation 3x to install, remove, then reinstall...sucks balls. I think thats what hes saying.

I grew up in Port Hueneme, CA where the BMW come in the west coast. Back when I was a teenager only Mazda's entered the port. If they had damage they were crushed on site. It was amazing to see a brand new car destroyed. I remember a couple hundred cars lined up to be destroyed due to a floor collapse on the ship.

I just dropped off my car earlier today! She's gone!
I'll be driving an X1 until my car arrives next week. BMW has agreed to re-tint my windows, (I had it done after the sale of the vehicle) as well as transfer my downpipe!

On the whole I'm pleased with how the situation has been handled.

Glad it is working out for you, zero miles all over again, nice. Did you get the exact same color and options?

I would not mind getting that phone call and trying to negotiate one of the first M2's to come off the production line.
