Cracked Windshield

Cracked my windshield the other day - it not very long, perhaps about 8 inches... what do you guys recommend, OEM or Safelite?
Is this something that needs to be done right away or would you wait? I dont want to change it and then crack it again.... or should I just belly up and get it changed? Thoughts?

Thank you!

Safelite will work fine. You can get OEM glass from Safelite.

Definitely change as soon as possible..last thing you want is to get a rock flying at you on the highway and have a bigger windscreen failure.

Go OEM.

Thank God that insurance on any damaged windshield is free of cost in Florida!

I had safelite done on my F30 with the HUD and had no issues whatsoever. The total cost to me was $0.00

The only visual difference was the lack of the roundel and the fact that the new windshield I got had a small opening above the windscreen for the front view camera (which my car did not have). Since I was leasing there was zero incentive other than an OCD level cosmetic difference that could not be determined by anyone else who didn't know the difference.

Structurally glass is glass. People on these boards have talked about "soft" glass, which is snake oil BS - hardness is hardness.

If you want to pay the delta to have the Roundel on the corner that is certainly your choice, but if you're doing it with an expectation that there is a difference in quality then be warned. Also, many BMW dealers outsource their glass replacement, so if you want to have it done by the dealership confirm they will actually change it themselves. I called 2 local dealers and both confirmed they outsource to an un-named third party.

definitely would change it right away. Not sure how the crack happened but if it started out as a chip and led to a large crack like that, you could have easily gotten the chip filled in as road vibrations and even slamming the door would lead to the crack size to increase.

When I had mine replaced a few months ago, OEM glass was the only option from Safelite.

My experience with Safelite:

1. First appointment - they didn't show up.
2. Second appointment - they showed up, but didn't have the parts necessary for the install.
3. Third appointment - they sent an inexperienced tech who misaligned the windshield, left adhesive on the paint, and scratched the cowl and interior pillars.
4. Fourth appointment - took the car into the shop and they had their most experienced tech re-install the windshield properly and replace the damaged parts.

Some people have a great Safelite experience. Unfortunately, I didn't.

We had Safelite replace the windshield in our 2012 Mercedes Benz GLK350 about a year and a half ago after a stone hit. They did a good job. The technician was punctual and did the job right in our garage. The windshield looks like new.

I've done 3 windscreens with safelite to date. All 3 were easy to schedule, they did them while I was at work and I never had any issues following installation. I am in a more urban area, if you live in a very rural area they may have less experienced techs given the number of claims.

I had a pretty good experience with the Safelite techs here in DC. On their first visit, they didn't have the right part but at least they were honest about it and ordered the correct OEM part rather than screwing up my car. They brought the right part on the second visit and had it done in a hour. No complaints.

I had the same issue...

The dealer (Bill Jacobs in Naperville, IL) replaced it for me. My insurance covered all but $100 of the replacement cost. Only real downside was that first, dealer didn't have the right windshield, then, once they got that, they didn't have a special tool that ONLY the 2-series needs to replace the windshield, nor did any other dealer in the Chicago area... so it had to come from Germany.

3 weeks after the windshield got cracked, I had a new one and it's been fine ever since.

I am from Calgary as well. 3 big cracks in the windshield. I was going to wait a little longer but the 228 is a year old and that is about how long the windshield lasts up here.

Mine cracked like the OP's last winter, still haven't changed it and won't until next Spring. There's really no rush if it doesn't affect your vision.

@cire:

Where did you go to change your windshield? Did you use BMW glass? Or just go OEM?

How much did it cost you again?

Damnnn! Do you get to claim insurance with that? Is there any reason why you don't want to do OEM?

$350 or so at Crystal Glass in downtown Calgary. I bought the car at Calgary BMW and they quoted me something like $1200. It's just a windshield. I don't think I know anyone who has bought OEM. Up here in Canada, with so much debris on the road, windshields just don't last (especially on Deerfoot).

Runflats don't last either. A couple more months and back to the winter setup

I ended up paying Just under $200 for it, thanks to a $1000 credit I had received from the dealership due to delivery problems on my replacement car. My 2015 was one of the vehicles BMW recalled. My 2015 needed a new tire at 500KMs, my 2016 needed a new windshield at 200KMs, not much for luck.

That's a pretty sad consolation considering that Florida has some of the more f'ed up insurance regulations and prices in the country and on top of that. having a low or no deductible comprehensive policy on any decent insurance carrier is only a few bucks per month compared to a deductible near or greater than the out of pocket expense of a new windshield.

Enjoy that "FREE" glass coverage.
