Mounting sail tweeters is possible, but probably needs several specific interior bits.

If you go this route, post back w/ results - I'm especially curious about how the speakers sound w/ the base amp (all the reviews I've found are people w/ the HK amp).
the bavsound upgrade kit for a 2015 228i w/ base system actually shows a pick with 5 speakers and it describes them as "BAVSOUND 4" (100mm) 3-Leg Point Source Neodymium Coaxial, Flush Flange, Pair + INTEGRATED 13mm Point Source Silk Dome Tweeter" -- so, you're correct, it doesnt include the sail tweeters. that was part of my questioning the value of this upgrade...or if i should look at an upgrade that would provide component tweeters.

Duh, should have read it rather than just looked at the pictures. From what I know, coaxials are equivalent to separates if they use good components, at least in this setting (in a soundbooth you would be able to do better, but in a moving car it should not be something you can notice). Probably a bit of a difference b/c they aren't aimed as directly, but to me it is not worth the hassle of tearing up the sail panel and hunting down the HK-specific pieces (not a HUGE hassle, but I still haven't gotten time to pull the center channel, so I try to be realistic about how little I'm able to make time for).

You cannot buy the sails alone, they come with the HK tweeter installed which you pull out and throw away. You'd also need to install the tweeters in the rear which requires a slightly different cover grille if memory serves, since you can get Bavsound for HK which has mid and tweeter in each location. But they don't sell a kit, at least to my knowledge which may be dated, that has tweeters in front and coax in rear.

In all honesty I have the coax in the rear in my wagon and they sound really nice, I wouldn't go through the brain damage or added expense of messing around with adding separate tweeters throughout. And let's be perfectly frank here, the stock HiFi system is so crap anything will be an upgrade.

thanks for the feedback. any other solid choices for the base/hi-fi upgrade that might be a better value? i've seen the posts on JL audio and eton as possible alternatives...

..kind of ready to make a decision with this bavsound opportunity sitting there.

I will throw in my 2 cents as you decide. I am a big fan of Bavsound, well documented on the forums. The extra $ you spend vs other alternatives gets you U.S. company with good customer support if you need help, versus buying grey label stuff that's not really sold here. It's all pretty idiot proof, and you have a 4 year warranty. On the back end the gear tends to hold its value very well based on classifieds here - so if you resell when done you're probably not spending a whole lot more versus other alternatives.

It's not going to get you true top end performance, but for that you wouldn't be looking at value-focused DIY. You'd be throwing huge dollars at professional install stuff.

merry christmas to me....will report back improvements soon.

gonna evaluate the improvements with the stage 1 speaker kit, and then think about the subwoofers later on. i do enjoy a nice thumpin' bass.

One thing with the ghost subs - you end up lowering the bass setting and hence shoving less low range through the mids / tweeters or coax. So your speakers end up doing less heavy lifting and sound even better.

Are you using the stock amp? Curious how this works out for you.

for now, yes. stock amp and no sub. my guess is that i'll add a sub next.

need for these arctic temps to pass so i can get the install done. i was just too busy to carve out enough time to do this over the holidays.

i'll definitely report back results.

Aside from being uncomfortable everything is held together with plastic clips - which get brittle and break easily in the cold.

Hey guys, so this is a bit of a delayed (2+ year lol) post.

But what I ended up doing was ordered the tweeters from the Harmon Kardon version. In my opinion if you will do anything, you must do this first.

Then I was able to find a cheaper set of BAV speakers stage 1 components on ebay from a 3 series (it was like 50% off) and they fit here perfectly fine.

You can splice into the wires, or you can make it pretty with a splitter.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-BMW-E60-E...frcectupt=true

The original Harmon Kardon tweeters as well as the BAV tweeters come with a capacitor so you don't need to worry about blowing them. It is plug and play.

It is ridicolous how the base model doesn't have tweeters. I recently rented a Dodge Uhaul van. All it had was a radio - but it had fucking tweeters. Disgraceful, bmw.

Easy fix though.

It is pretty sad when my daughter's Nissan Sentra has a better sound system. Even the OEM system in my 2004 Toyota Tacoma sounds better.

How easy are these tweeters to install? How difficult was it to remove the existing triangles off, get the door panels off and then attach the speaker wires? Can’t see from the pictures on the ECS site, but I’d imagine there are wires that you run toward the existing speakers in the door panels? Sorry for all the questions - I’m a total newbie when it comes to this. All I want to do is install the tweeters!
