GSR Autosport - First Track Test of #BMW228Racing @ Buttonwillow

We had our first official test day with the #BMW228Racing this last weekend at Buttonwillow Racepark. The four of us that got to drive it agreed that it is one of the most balanced and compliant cars we have ever driven.

Our main focus was on the damper setup. We are running KW Suspension Motorsport dampers designed specifically for the car - they were truly phenomenal. We tested our softest spring setup approximately 500lbs front and 600 lbs rear with stock swaybars required by World Challenge.

The body roll was a bit more than we would like but totally manageable. Once the car took a set there was a surprisingly large amount of grip on the Yokohama AD08R tires (140 treadwear).

The amazing thing about the test is how well the car did with the curbing. We were really nailing the curbs especially coming out of the Bus Stop and the car never really got unsettled. The Apex Wheels took the abuse as well. We'll be testing progressively stiffer springs setups as we continue our test program with the car.

The Wavetrac helical LSD worked flawlessly as well - would definitely recommend for street applications on your 228 or M235 or F30 3-Series. Another surprise was that even though it was 106 degrees out there we didn't have any major overheating issues. The only issue we had on the last session was a momentary loss in power which didn't generate any sort of error or put the car into limp mode - something that we are going to need to look into.

Development will continue at the shop. Our next test day is scheduled for September 6th at The Streets of Willow with Shift-S3ctor.

Mods: Please advise if this needs to be moved to other section...?

Is your car a base 228i or a Sport Line?

Any particular reason that you didn't go for a M-Sport 228i? I thought that the M-Sport is supposed to have better cooling than the other lines due to the deletion of the fog lights (I think that there's supposed to be an extra oil cooler or something where the right fog light would normally be?).

Man.. why have more people not commented..

As a current 228 owner I think what GSR is doing is great. Sounds like the 228 is great track car. Can't wait to see how the car develops over time. I'm also in the SoCal area. I'll stop by some time. I'm also curious as to why not the M-sport. If the msport version is some how heavier I would think the additional cooling would be worth it. But it's nice to know without that additional cooling the car still runs hard in +100 degree weather. Meaning the msport version would be unstoppable.

I'm new to BMWs and haven't found definite answers whether or not the M-sport has extra coolers. But Hopefully (hopefully!) GSR's testing will determine whether or not an extra cooler is necessary for tracking the car and maybe will develop it?

GSR: I am curious when the Wavetrac helical LSD will be available and what the pricing is going to be? I don't see it available on your website for the 228i. Thanks.

I can confirm there are two extra radiators on the 228 msport model. One on each side in the air curtains. However I'm not sure what they cool. But they are there.

I'm assuming like the F30 one is the oil cooler and the second is an aux radiator to supplement the main cooling.

Too much cooling is never a bad thing on a turbo motor.

Keep us posted - I'm debating whether or not to go to the M235i or the 228 and save the money on tires or mods for track use.
