HELP - 228i Gran Coupe Xi Tire Side Adjusment Inquiry

Hello Everyone!

I'm new to the forum and look forward to a lot of the threads that I will get to see. I need some assistance on tires.

My 2021 BMW 228i Gran Coupe XI came with 225/40R-18 wheels on it. Living in rural Northwest Tennessee, we are in pothole/crater country. I cringe every time I go down the road out of fear, I will have to dodge them. My question is will a 255/40R-18 fit without any modification? Just to have a slightly taller tire? Or what does the group recommend? I would truly appreciate it.

Thanks!

MJ

Your car came with 225/40R-18 tires on it, not wheels. If you're worried about potholes damaging your wheels or tire sidewalls you need a taller tire, not a wider one. 255/40R-18 is 30 mm wider, but has the same sidewall aspect ratio as your stock tires. You could consider something like 205/45-18 for more protection.

The size of your wheels also needs to be taken into consideration - obviously you'd need an 18" tire diameter, but the wheel width also dictates what width of tire can be safely mounted. And you need to determine if the taller tire will clear the wheel well & body work.

Look through/search previous threads on the wheel/tire section of the forum, or ask there. Good luck! https://www.2addicts.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=521

Hello John,

Thank you so much for your response. I also should have stated "tires" and not "wheels"....lol. I will check out those other threads you recommended as well as check into the 205/45/18 you mentioned.

18" wheels are what all the cool kids get, and they cost more so they must be better, right?

17" wheels and tires ride better and are more durable. And I think they are lighter so better handling on bumps.

Your best option is to drop down a size and move to the 17" wheels.

I had the same problem with my 228 xdrive coupe came with cool looking 225/40/18. Living in Michigan also potholes are everywhere literally. I changed to 205/50/17 they fit perfectly without any modifications I did it by comparing the tire height on tire calculator or comparison. But yeah 205/50/17 is ur choice

Similar story. I bought 17" wheels for winter tires. After the warranty expired on my original tires and wheels (I paid extra for it when purchasing the car new) and I got tired of flats, I simply put summer tires on the 17" wheels and sold the original OEM 18"wheels on Craigslist for a few hundred bucks. Knock wood, no flats since.
