Post BMW 2 Series Laser-Powered Headlights

Hi All,

Does Anyone Have Any "Inside" Information As To When The 2 Series Models Will Have An Option To Add Laser-Powered Headlights?

Thanks In Advance

Considering this isn't offered on anything other than the i8 and is rumored (though highly likely) to be an option on the new 7 series, it'll likely be 4-5 years before it trickles down to lower entry-level cars.

And of course all this is also dependent on U.S. regulators approving the use of laser headlights on the roads.

Yeah, don't hold your breath. The 1/2 series is the bottom end of the BMW lineup and I wouldn't expect high end features to come soon, if ever. LED technology is ubiquitous these days and isn't offered on the 2.

Not quite ubiquitous ... though they'll be standard on the new 1-series in Europe. I'd put money on LED headlights being an option for 2017 US models (and maybe even 2016 -- doubtful, but we'll know for sure within a month) and standard on the upcoming M2.

And what do you think the probability is of the 2 series receiving LED headlights anytime soon?

That is more realistic, since as mentioned the 1 series refresh will get them as an option in Europe.

I'd expect you'll see them as an available option on the 2 series refresh on the 2017 cars. Given how BMW tiers cars and options (at least in the US) it may only be an available option on the M240i and M2.

I'll throw another curveball into this…..What are the chances that when LED lights become an option, that they will offer a replacement system for those who bought halogens/xenons for 2014 and 2015 models?

Eventually the parts will come available and you will be able to purchase them the same way you could purchase any part for your car. Someone will have to go through and find the required parts and there will also be coding required. The same process can be done to retrofit Xenons in place of Halogens. Also usually the spare parts are not available for some time after the initial cars have been built. Getting spare parts early on in the builds is difficult.

With that said, it is very expensive to do this. The markup on parts is very high and you're not leveraging the cost benefit of doing it from the factory.
