Cue the melodrama.
This is the same row that occurred when the 328i was lauded as the driving man's 3-series. The strength of the N20 makes it hard to justify the additional weight of the N55... until you put the pedal down. It all comes down to what you want out of the car. If you want N55 levels of acceleration performance, then you go with the M235i. If you want a lightweight car with excellent turn-in response, you get a 228i with this "track handling package". Horses for courses, and all that jazz.

The 338i vs. 235i argument is pointless. They are both very compelling cars. It's not like comparing a 1999 Camaro Z28 with it's glorious LS1 with a 1999 Camaro with it's (Oldsmobile) 3.8 V-6.
No doubt the N20 closed the performance gap in comparison to the N55, in comparison to the previous generation N52 to N54/5. Economy, power/torque curve ect is awesome.... but the N20 no doubt gave up some refinement to get there in terms of sound and possibly throttle response.... but 150lb less over the nose is sweet too...... ugh so many factors. Such a great time to be a bme guy... and awful as well with the lack of a 328i wagon with a stick....

For my mother, that would mean a wheelchair and a cane. For me it means a packed, carry-on suitcase and a business bag containing a tablet pc, accessories for it, my passport, a Bluetooth earpiece, a pair of sunglasses, a paperback book, and charging cords for my phones. All the best.

let me guess though.. xdrive doesnt get this option... bmw apparently thinks awd wants to have a large front wheel well gap instead of handling.
btw. mobility kit is the slime kits.. just branded for bmw to charge 100 more

+1 that the LSD should be part of the package or at least an option, not port/dealer installed.

Schweeeet! So does this now mean that BMW is no longer going to "void warranty if vehicle was used on/in a track environment?"
"wink-wink" BMW! ;-)

There's not much 'track handling' about this package IMO:
-I have a 125i (basically the same car as the 228i with other software ) and specifically configured my way around Servotronic and VSS in order to have the steering wheel with the most feel and feedback and which is unhampered by a variable ratio. -I also avoided the Adaptive suspension because they are expensive (also to replace), and the M Sport suspension is already a perfect allrounder, also for the occasional Nürburgring-trip. A real track package should have had the M Performance suspension. -Also, a track-package should include an LSD, only then we would have seen a spiritual successor of the 318is. Really hope that the M Performance LSD will also fit the 125i/228i. Would prefer that over going non-OEM. Either way, this package is not worthy of its name without it. -the Michelin PSS are supposed to be terrific tires, but those are (according to Leebman 24) standard on the 18" 461 M-wheels. -I am extremely satisfied with the M Sport-brakes though, knowing they are developed for the M135i gives enormous confidence. I have the feeling that I never really used their capacities yet, not even on the Ring or in the mountains. Supposedly they are good enough for an occasional track day. So don't waste your money on packages, just tick the right boxes. |

It's interesting how now they are marketing "track" components, but in the end it's a passenger car with this "legal door". It's just an out for them if there was excessive usage leading to component failure. This was such a big discussion during the intro of the 335's due to the early overheat / limp-home issues seen on-track. And just because a dealer sponsors an event, doesn't mean that a warranty claim will be covered, as warranty repairs are submitted by the dealer to BMWNA for reimbursement. It's BMWNA/BMWAG that foot the bill for warranty repairs. So hence my comment: BMW are you egging us on to REALLY track these cars now, or is it just more marketing? And did you change the warranty agreement? :-)

LSD and hydraulic steering would a great step towards capturing the spirit of the 318is. I would way rather have the LSD than the adaptive suspension.

Isn't the hydraulic steering also included in this 228i package, which seems to be the same basic content? The new package adds the brakes and tires, but does it change the suspension/steering from this?

I think they are actually queuing the M2. They are giving the 228 the same adaptive suspension, Brakes and Steering as found only on the M235. This is different than the adaptive suspension currently available on the 228. Once the new M2 comes out they will more than likely drop the M235. Dont need 2 M-Performance models in the same range.
Just a thought!! But it seems like a logical play. Because now you have essentially a M228 when you select this Track Pack. The only thing missing is the sound which may or may not be coming. Does this mean the M2 is coming sooner rather than later???

The new Track Handling Package endows the 228i with a litany of performance upgrades previously restricted to the M235i. Upgrades include adaptive M adaptive suspension, 18-inch light-alloy wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, M sport brakes with larger cross-drilled discs, and variable sport steering. Opting for the package will essentially get you the dynamic handling of the M235i without the greater power and lower efficiency of its larger engine.
Read more: http://www.automobilemag.com/feature...#ixzz2yzMe4zSt Should handle a little better considering the weight difference of the engines. I still would rather have the M235i. |

This is good, the 228 is the better track car, the M235 is the better straight-line-speed car. Though, with a BMS tune, the 228 is probably just as fast in a straight line.

I can understand how you might be confused, but it is still electric. All the electric systems connect an electric motor to the mechanical rack and pinion to provide servo assist. They all have a mechanical rack with teeth into which the pinion gear meshes. This option is just altering the spacing of the teeth (slower around center and faster further from center). Porsche has done this for years with both hydraulic and electric assist. I am not a fan - makes it feel a little artificial (worse with electric assist).
