Question about Auto On/Off Stop

Don't think I saw someone bring this up but when you get to a red light or in traffice and the engine cuts out....does it only cut out for "x" amount of time? At first I thought I was letting go of the pedal very lightly causing the engine to kick in but clearly that is not the case....

It is a function of how charged the battery is. On a full charge it will stay off the entire time. If you just started the car, it won't stop at all.

Also the air conditioning and other options can drain the battery enough to cause the car to auto start.

When the cabin starts to get hot, the engine will kick back on to provide more AC.

Also experienced that when it turns off at a stop, you can turn it back on by turning the wheel. And once it's turned on during the duration of that stop, it wont turn off again until the next time you stop.

The start/stop rarely activates for me here in Phoenix, the conditions are right for it to happen. Will probably see it work a lot after the summer though.

Does it auto-engage in Eco mode? Was stuck in traffic on NJTP so threw it in Eco for a while, noticed start stop was active when I stopped for fuel.

If you're stopped for a long time it'll kick back on. It isn't meant for very long stops, just your usual stop light.

Also... I think when the AC is on, it will turn off when the AC is on Level 1. It does it sometimes on Level 2, but not as often.

I think the longest I've had it off on a light was 2 minutes.

Why? I find it turns the car on almost instantly, really doesn't get in the way of driving I dont think.

I don't care for the engine stop mode, so I keep that feature turned off. I also do not care much for the Eco Pro mode - it's the coasting part that bugs me. I like to feel some engine compression hold back when going down hills.

Despite me defeating these so-called fuel economy features, my M235i shows a combined 26.6 MPG since new (2500+ miles) and highs of 34.7 MPG on the highway using the Comfort mode (360 mile trip just last week).

I've come to the conclusion that the engine stop and Eco Pro modes are really splitting hairs - probably not bad ideas, but still splitting hairs regarding MPG.

My car somehow remembers the last setting. It has stayed off even when I drive in comfort mode.

34.7 MPG? That is pretty freaking good. What MPH did you drive at on the freeway?

I agree on the Eco Pro mode, I can't do it. I tried this morning and it just makes the car feel way to sluggish and the throttle is too unresponsive. If you give it more gas, then all of a sudden is surges forward and doesn't feel smooth.

I use Comfort mode almost exclusively and I find it's just right. If I feel like doing a little bit of spirited driving or theres a nice sweeping left turn coming up or a twisty road, I'll switch to Sport for a bit.

Stop Start option

I never use it when in Eco mode, always turn it off. I also don't use eco mode that much, not fun.

The vast majority of my 360 mile trip was between 70 MPH and 82 MPH on the interstate highway. The last 100 miles were on some 2-lane highways with speeds between 55 and 65 MPH. And this included a couple of 95+ MPH passes of a long line of trucks.

This car is frigging amazing!

'Shouldn't ' be any as it designed in with a beefier starter motor etc etc. Only long term will we really see. Cars in the UK started with this about 3-4 years ago now I think.
