Unhappy OEM Michelin Pilot Super Sports wearing early

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue. My car is almost at 21,000 kilometres (~13,000 miles), and the front tires are wearing at the edges early. The tires are the stock staggered Pilot Super Sports, 225 section in the front, and 245s at the back. The car isn't an xDrive model, just RWD.

The wear seems to be at the nose of the tire (photos below). I stay pretty well on top of tire pressure, and the alignment doesn't feel like it's off. My reaction was there's a bit of positive camber causing the uneven wear. When I brought the car to my local BMW dealership, they said, "that's just how the cars are set up," and that it's normal for the front tires to wear that way.

Judging from Michelin's warranty, they should be a 86% of the tread life. Obviously I don't expect them to be in new shape, but I thought the wear would be a bit more even. The only even thing is that the nose wear is happening on the outside edges on both front tires. As a result, I feel like I have to change out the tires sooner than I was hoping. I know these tires are a soft compound with a short lifetime, but it feels a bit too short. There's also still plenty of tread on the rear tires. Let me know if I'm just crazy.

Also, it's worth mentioning that I bought in to 2 years of the Rim and Tire Protection. It expires this August and I've never claimed a cent from it (it was a mistake buying it in the first place). I guess I do well at dodging nails and potholes. The warranty doesn't cover wear, but I'm wondering if maybe BMW Canada could wiggle on that.

It's normal. Mine looked the same after about 10k miles. You need more negative camber to prevent this wear. Just install a set of M3/M4 lower control arms. It will help.

Had exact same problem on my 2015 m235 at 10k miles. Added the M4 LCA and the wear rate has definitely subsided....unfortunately I still need to replace both fronts in the next 2-3k mi due to the original wear before adding lcas. By the way it drives and handles better too.

Does changing the LCA change tire/wheel fitment possibilities. I was planning on getting more agressive wheels and tires.

It adds camber so you should be able to fit slightly bigger tires without hitting the fender.... but it also moves the wheel about an inch forward so you have to consider that too

Typical

I had them on my old 135i vert. Lasted about 15K miles. Not sure it was worth the trade off - high horsepower and torque car combined with expensive tires for slightly better grip in high speed cornering in everyday driving conditions.

It's really what your goals are. My current setup is a square 17" setup with runflats. Lower horsepower and torque also helps tire tread longevity. Along with slightly lower unsprung weight. For me this works for the long haul.

Unfortunately its difficult to defeat the laws of physics and money.

I just added Michelin A/S 3+ to my M235i. It has a 45,000 mile warranty with a Y speed rating.

That warrantee is only good for non staggered sizes though.

Not true.

F8x LCAs reduce clearance to the fender, both by moving the wheel forward and by moving the wheel outward. Remember both the top and bottom of the wheel move outward, top just moves less.

I have direct experience with this: F8X LCAs caused my 255s to rub, I had to roll my front fenders to fix the issue.

I have a square setup. So I am good with the full 45,000 mile warranty.

But the warranty is valid on staggered setup also. The fronts get the full warranty and the rears get 50%.

I had to laugh at the other thread with people claiming they got 15-20K out of a set of Michelin PSSs on their M235i or 228iTHP.

Here is my front left after one year and 7800 miles. The front right is the same. The rears are fine, basically the same as the center section of the fronts all the way across.

I am a fairly aggressive driver, but this is mostly on suburban streets and freeway, so the hardest cornering it ever really sees is the local 270-degree on-ramp. I keep the pressures at 34-36, tested with two different hand gauges and the on-board sensors. The alignment is within spec, according to my friend with a tire shop who checked it on their Hunter Hawkeye.

I have never had tires wear this fast before, certainly not on my previous E82 and E93 both with Bridgestone RE050 run-flats. Is this *really* expected from these tires on the F-series front end with its lack of camber?

Reading this forum it's very easy to be "normalized" (new political word) into thinking that the solution is F8x LCAs and/or camber plates, but why should I have to do that, and why the hell is it set up like that in the first place?

I wish mine looked as good as your with the mileage you listed, though I probably do more cornering, at 20000 miles I'm on my third set of tire's. Get a second opinion but I do 37psi in my fronts and I think it helps.

Just purchased some 19x8.5 et35 (225 front) and 19x9.5 et45 (255 rear) and to replace my stock setup. Same story, 13k mikes and BMW says I need replacements. Looked at it as reason to buy new shoes but would like to keep the next set on a little bit longer. Can anyone confirm if you have to roll fenders if you add the M3\M4 LCAs?

Yes, but they are more expensive and more expensive to install. A lot of them were having design issues and failing initially and it will be a reason for BMW to deny suspension warranty if you ever have an issue and show up at the dealership with the plates on....

On the other side...the plates give you the option of multiple camber settings...while the LCAs it's just a fixed amount

Michelin's warranty is only for 15k miles for staggered setup, 30k for square setup due to ability to rotate tires

I have 9,300 miles and mine look like the OP's tires. I think part of my issue is all my miles are 1-3 mile trips with a lot of turns and zero hwy miles. My rears do not look bad at all. Anybody ever just replaced the fronts instead of doing all four?

Mine are already getting some moderate wear after only 6.2k miles. I too think it's a bit ridiculous. I drive fairly conservatively most of the time, with mainly highway miles. These tires are not cheap....not impressed.

One more case of premature tire wear.

My 2019 230 w/THP at 11K miles also wants new front tires. A fair amount of my mileage is freeway. I love to drive that car around corners but never fast enough to elicit more than the occasional chirp from the tires. Plan to put on PILOT SUPER SPORT 4S.
