If you HAD to pick between the two...Chevron or Shell?
Hey guys. It seems about a year ago BMW entered into some sort of partnership with Shell. For the longest time, I have always been a Chevron user with my old E46. Now, I have a 2016 228i and still use Chevron. I'm wondering though if I should switch to Shell V-Power. Anybody have any input on this? I know it cant hurt to try it for awhile and see if the car performs any better or not...

Brands of gas do make a difference. Rather than the name though, it's the formulas those brands have in the blends of additives.
When I had my previous cars, I always did my best to ensure that it was always 93 octane at a top tier rated gas station (based off data from gasbuddy). But for my m235, I've strictly used Shell. All Shell stations are top tier (obvious almost), and I do notice it burns a bit more efficiently than some other 93 octanes. |

I usually use what is available when the fuel light comes on...always have...never noticed a difference in 32 years of driving....unless I use the wrong octane... Then it is obvious.

Damn. While I always use premium 93 octane, I never realized that the brand made a difference. I am still skeptical (based on knowledge that the gas comes from jobbers who serve various brands) but will give it a try to see if I notice a difference

You may not notice anything soon. Top tier refers to the brand-specific detergent package added to the generic gasoline delivered to the particular gas station. This affects long term carbon deposition/internal cleanliness/efficiency. This isn't something you'll quickly notice day to day...just a longer lasting, well-performing engine. If you are a 24-36 month lessee, it likely makes little difference.

Personally, I see no reason to believe the fuel sold by any of the major brands (Shell, Chevron, BP, Exxon, etc.) is different in any significant way. But, I am an engineer, so I need to see actual objective data before I believe something.

It would require some homework/research but the EPA regs on automotive fuel detergent and the standards set for top tier status will provide objective data for your review. Note the link several posts above.
