Fuel Economy ?
I was on the UK website and noticed something that does not make sense with regards to the new B47 diesel in 150hp and 190hp variaties. In the 5 series the 190hp version gets better fuel economy than the 150hp. But in the 2 series the 150hp gets better fuel economy. If the 2 series 150hp version came with the
8 speed transmission the fuel economy increase would even be greater. Does anybody know why. |

Weight...the 5 is big and heavy, meaning you have to push the lower rated engine harder to move the thing about. You don't have to do that in the lighter car. Similar principle behind why the lower power 320i doesn't get any better mileage than the 328i.

I hear what you are saying but something still does not make sense. The 190 HP B47 in the 5 gets 68.9 MPG on the combined european cycle and the 2 series with 2 wheel drive and the same engine gets 64.8. The 5 series weighs 850 LBS more and gets better mileage ? The aerodynamics could not be that bad on the 2 series. Is the 8 speed Aisin transmission in the 2 series that less efficent that the 8 speed ZF in the 5 Series ?

Fuel economy on 218i
Talking fuel economy... I'm disappointed with my new 218i automatic, which doesn't come close to the published specs.
After 2400kms of mostly urban driving and just one international trip so far of 700km, I see that my average fuel consumption is 7.2L/100km not even close to boasted figures. And, I'm not an aggressive driver, very relaxed in fact. Anyone else have their figures for the 218i ? Cheers. |

I have a 218i automatic and am disappointed with the MPG too.
I've done about 4200 miles in it, and am averaging around 32.8 MPG according to the on-board computer. Much of it can probably be blamed on the short distance driving I do throughout the week around London. I think the best I've achieved so far is about 40 MPG on a long distance run on the motorway (about 400 miles averaging around 70 MPH). My Dad also bought a 218i automatic and is getting similar results. Sort of regretting not going for a diesel but I would probably have run into DPF issues if I did. |

This is old news.. The way car companies "test" and determine these figures are completely irrelevant to the real world. They do it on a rolling road on a machine in perfect conditions indoors. Real world driving can NEVER replicate that.
