Fuel Pump Recall!

Nissan and BMW have issued separate recalls for the very same problem: faulty fuel pumps manufactured by Bosch. According to bulletins from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2014 Nissan Rogue and a range of late-model BMW vehicles were equipped with pumps that may suddenly fail, increasing the risk of an accident.

NHTSA says that the fuel pump flaw is rooted in the metal plating used inside the devices. In BMW's defect report (PDF), NHTSA says that:

"Contamination due to improper nickel plating of certain sub-components within the fuel pump may cause excessive friction, potentially resulting in an inoperative fuel pump. If the fuel pump becomes inoperative due to this condition, the vehicle operator may experience a no-start condition or in rare cases a stalling condition without the ability to restart the vehicle."

Should the vehicle stall in traffic, it could dramatically increase the odds of a collision.

The recalls affect the following makes and models:

2014 BMW 228i
2014 BMW 320i
2014 BMW 320xi
2014 BMW 328i
2014 BMW 328xi
2014 BMW 335i
2014 BMW 335xi
2014-2015 BMW 428i
2014-2015 BMW 428xi
2014-2015 BMW 435i
2014 BMW 435Xi
2014 BMW ActiveHybrid 3
2014 BMW M235i
2014 Nissan Rogue
The Rogue recall is limited to vehicles built between June 11, 2013, and June 7, 2014. Some 76,242 vehicles registered in the U.S. are affected.

Some of the recalled BMW models are limited to specific build dates, too, but we recommend calling BMW for clarification. The automaker says that 18,054 U.S. vehicles are affected.
BMW will mail recall notices to owners no later than April 30, 2015. After receiving those notices, owners will be able to take their cars to BMW dealers, who will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. For further details, BMW customer service can be reached at 800-525-7417. NHTSA can also answer owner questions at 888-327-4236. (Ask about safety campaign #15V189000.)

If I recall correctly one of our forum members had this exact problem recently when his car stalled while driving it.

Yup! Yay for suddenly shutting off on the freeway drive home!

I wonder if it was replaced with the "better" pump.

Do we have to wait for this letter or can we bring it in right away?

Haven't seen any problems with my 2014 M235i yet, even though I'm only on 5000 miles... I will probably have a talk with my dealership this weekend. But dammit this sucks...

I would call the dealer. They should be able to immediately tell you in your car is involved and if the replacement parts are available.

This shows what production dates are effected. Looks like 10-13 to 3-14 production models 228 and M235I.

I'm picking up a new 2015 228i May 4 on an ED. 2015 BMW's are not in this recall. I wonder if the fuel pumps were changed out for this model year already? And if they were changed out, has BMW known about this issue for a long period of time?

It is pretty dangerous having your new BMW stop running while you are driving.

I just called my dealership. They've been aware of the problem since last year and only just now has it become a recall. When mine died in November, he said there was a good chance it was replaced with the "corrected" unit.

*edit*

But as far as being able to tell me if my car is on the recall list or not yet, they don't have that specific information just yet.

Dealership just checked my vin and said they don't see anything on there as of now. But my car falls within the production dates affected. But I'm at 15000 miles and no issues yet... Could it be that mine won't be affected or is it just a matter of time.

So I just pulled into a parking lot and my car started VIOLENTLY shaking...it's a March 2014 production car.

After it started shaking I got drivetrain malfunction, and it shut off. It won't start at all now, but tried to crank. I have only 10,800 miles on the car.

We'll see what happens when it's towed to the dealer.

Just a tip but not even sure if it's really correct. If you start to feel shaking check the tachometer if the tach needle fluctuates bizarrely it could possibly signify fuel delivery issues. As opposed to the tach slamming to the left to OFF which may signal electrical issues.

I had the shaking as well- it was basically the auto start stop trying to restart the car after it died while moving. Strange sensation.

My 228i was built 3-2-14, so inside the dates of the recall as well.

Although I feel for you guys. It helps me sleep at night now knowing it's only limited to the 2014 models.... But I have a feeling like Robert Durst I'm jinxed

How does this work for non-US owners? Is the recall still valid?
