Looks like an amazing car. I am resisting test driving at my local as I don't want to be pining after one.

The lap time is very impressive, I wonder (if and) when the 2016 supercar arrives how quick that will do it.

Since 1455kg was the INITIAL bmw-given curb weight, I have to disagree and say that they did not in fact weigh their car in this test and just looked online for a posted weight, found the older listed bmw weight, and used that.

Sounds more likely.

Awesome video and review. Looks like tons of fun. Brings back memories, I used to ride that track all the time.

It's probably worth mentioning this is a short, technical track with many tight turns. At some point more horsepower doesn't help much at a track like the Streets of Willow.

Great placement for the M235i.

Btw seeing this car in person is a whole thing, better than pictures. The rear end looks much better in person. The interior is also very nice. Those of you who got one, enjoy it, a true BMW and this car is all about what we know BMW to stand for.

The 2-Series Active Tourer has some big shoes to fill!

(Couldn't resist!)

Hey well if the i8 is the #2 most fun BMW on the list according to BMW engineers, that's damn good in my book.

That 2014 STI time is pretty impressive compared to the m235, heavier and down on horsepower running a10 year old engine still manages with a brilliant time. Obviously awd is immensely helpful but the suspension, Chassis tuning on the STI must be very good. The cla kinda disappoints though, all that extra power, awd and weight advantage doesn't translate well on the track.

actually the 2014 WRX STI weighs less then the M235i, but as you said, it is definitely down on power. But then again, the car comes with 2 LSD while the BMW has none

Teaser for next week. I am assuming its their video of M235i vs WRX STI vs CLA45 AMG

Surely, the new M3/M4 will be the next "most fun" BMW. But that is saying a heck of a lot, if BMW engineers are really quoting this! I can only imagine how good this car is with a proper LSD

I don't know if anyone even noticed that they did test acceleration and braking independently of previous tests:

0-60 (no launch control): 4.4 seconds (ay carumba!)
1/4 mile: 13.0 @ 106 mph
60-0 Braking: 103 ft

Also just barely off the 1M's numbers on the slalom and skidpad…with no LSD and narrower tires IIRC.

These are awfully good numbers for a comfortable, entry-level sports coupe.
Not many cars in the BMW stable (or any other for that matter) beat all of the above numbers.

Mind this puppy has only been gently *massaged* by the M boys. It frightens me what they could do with a lighter, tighter and more powerful version!

Got beat by a Subaru STI? Seriously? How embarrassing!

As an ex STI'er I am taken back because my 2011 e90 335i was far superior.

Fantastic review. I ordered it before driving it just liking the car from what I was hearing. I ended up getting behind the wheel and wow, it felt great even coming from an E60 M5. Can't wait for mine to come in so I can get some wide body action on it

Your 335 was superior on Willow Springs ? Something tells me....no.

STIs are ugly...but they go like stink. That's all the track time worries about.

I'm sorry but your 335i was not faster than an STI around the track (stock for stock)

Pobst as a good driver is right....he really man-handles the thing, but impressive time nonetheless. Don't forget that Willow Springs is at 2600+ ft elevation, so will give advantage vs N/A cars. At sea level, some of these other N/A cars' times will be better.

309 hp vs 322 hp is an insignificant difference and the STI's are butt ugly boy racers. Using the 335 logic I guess Porsche will go out of business since the M235 was faster around the track than the 2013 Cayman S. I doubt anybody would claim the M235 is a better sports car than the Cayman S except the 335 owner since his car is superior to the STI.
335>STI>M235>Cayman S ha, ha , ha , ha funny. Maybe the reverse order would be accurate and I own a tuned 335 with a M235 on order. We all could buy 2 M235's for an optioned out Cayman S.

So the M235 is faster than a M3 but slower than a CLA45? The lap times seem to be all over the place

Not to be picky but there are multiple tracks at willow springs. But randy pobst looks like he is absolutely killing it at sow. Badass driver.

Makes me wonder what times he can pull with some of the cars these guys roll up to this track with.

Different conditions on different days, with (for some of the listed times) different drivers. This isn't a list of the fastest times ever recorded with these stock vehicles, so it isn't surprising that many of the comparisons don't "seem" to make sense.

Thanks Dackelone.

Great test, great car.
I loved the depth test.
It has an excellent strong hold, like all good German car should have.
Its stability is excellent and conveys much security.
